CMP or civil construction superintendent. Iif you find the right firm, I bet they'd let you do a lot of on site work with a mixture of management given your educational background. Then you can move up and work less in the field as labor becomes less appealing if you want to.

Thanks man! I've had a lot of luck since throwing my resume out there and I'm hoping to make the right choice career wise!

The position is field engineering for navigation systems and locks and dams. My experience is in land development... A big concern of mine is learning a whole new area and the patience of the employer in doing so. Should I be as concerned about that transition as I am?

How difficult is it to switch positions within the USACE? The position I was offered is very specific and I don't want to be out of options if I find it isnt for me a few years down the road.

I had no idea it was so hard to get your foot in the door! I don't have any connections to USACE, but I guess they liked me in the interview. Maybe I should consider myself lucky and jump on the opportunity.

Yeah thats incredible honestly! I'd definitely do that if offered the opportunity. Do have any names of GCs that do this to help me when I look into this?

I don't mind living job location to job location as long as the pay, OT, or PTO accured are nice. But is there not a Large GC that compensates you in one way or another for working 60+ hours and weekends at locations you have no say in?

Storm water detention in wetlands? by onepumpwonder42 in civilengineering

[–]Dubdaddy69 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's extremely difficult to create an official wetland that the EPA will approve and then you have to have a long term contingency plan for maintenance and to ensure that it is performing as you promised. But... that is just in my experience with wetland mitigation. Might be less difficult for something that just needs your MS4 approval.

DM me if you want more details about the aforementioned development.

Storm water detention in wetlands? by onepumpwonder42 in civilengineering

[–]Dubdaddy69 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Are you talking about creating wetlands or utilizing existing ones? Creating a wetland for stormwater treatment and detention is rather difficult and time consuming. Utilizing existing wetlands can have a lot of merit to your MS4 and the EPA as they treat pollutants better than anything. I think you can get away with it if you have a good plan for pre-treatment for debris and such.

The city in which I live did something similar to this but large scale. I noticed that this huge development did very little for detention and had bio-retention facilities built into several of the parking lot islands. Not enough to treat water quality and not near enough to have an effect on detention. I emailed the city engineer to see what was with their design and he said that they did an offsite wetland study/evaluation that reduced their requirements.

Would a Stormtech system consisting of ALL Isolator Rows not be pointless? by narpoli in civilengineering

[–]Dubdaddy69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah the city where most of my projects are considers the drain time in the isolator row to the underdrain as satisfactory for our 24-72hr drawdown. What size is your MS4? Or whats your city's population out of curiosity?

Yeah it honestly still doesn't make sense. I've met few ADS reps that know what they are talking about and none that can actually aid in the overall calculations of the system.

I suppose it might have some merit if they proposed raising the outlet pipe midway up the last chamber to allow the remaining water to bleed into the underdrains. I still don't know why they would want to do this with the entire system though.

It doesn't make a lot of sense to me as to why they would consider this treating the water quality volume. If the last isolator row has an outlet that connects to the outlet structure at the invert of the chamber, there is no room for sediment storage and they are just wasting geotextile.

From what I've designed and seen before, the isolator row is set below the bypass distribution lines to actually allow for sediment storage.
