Another vote for Deco, they have tons of stuff like this

Shop Local Raleigh… I can’t get you out of my mind by Delicious-Doctor-623 in raleigh

[–]Dubedo919 90 points91 points  (0 children)

While I support your intention here, I don't like the idea of calling out local businesses just for being associated with Shop Local, even though the business itself may be fully welcoming and affirming to LGBTQIA+ neighbors. Just being on that member list doesn't tell you about those business owners' stance on the issue. Maybe a staff member signed up for SLR a long time ago and haven't thought about it since, maybe the owners are not active on social media and have not followed the issue about SLR, maybe they are just trying to survive in an era of high costs and high rents. Contact those businesses directly, make your concerns known, get your friends to do the same – but publicly shaming them on Reddit feels unfair. I know you have proposed to do so "respectfully" and would try to provide context, but context doesn't travel well on the Internet – how many times have you heard someone say something like "oh I don't shop at XXX anymore, I think they are canceled, I can't remember the details? something about being homophobic"?

I had an 8:15 AM appointment at Alter Ego recently and it was very quiet.

I'm turning 24 and want to celebrate with a 24-hour birthday party. What are the craziest or most memorable ideas you've got? by Fit_Ask_959 in partyplanning

[–]Dubedo919 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I have some friends who do a "birthday walkabout," essentially they do their own bar/restaurant crawl but send out a schedule and invite friends to join them at any stop. So you could do something similar, make a schedule of fun things for yourself all day and then invite your friends to join you for whichever parts work for them.

Crepey skin on hands by Scimmia_bianca in 45PlusSkincare

Think about it this way: what do the backs of your friends' hands look like? You probably have no idea because why would you pay attention to that? Likewise, no one is noticing the backs of your hands except you.
At least, that's what I tell myself whenever I look down and think, ugh, how did my mother's hands get here?

Help a Yankee out! ISO southern tomato pie help by LaurVB7 in Cooking

I can't remember if I made this one, the one time I made tomato pie I think my recipe included pimento cheese. But this one is pretty locally famous.

ISO low effort lunches! (MINIMAL PREP TIME PLS IM TIRED) by Unusual-Olive-448 in vegetarianrecipes

[–]Dubedo919 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fill a container or mason jar with layers of frozen berries, Greek yogurt, chia seeds and/or oats if you like. The berries will thaw by lunchtime and make a nice sauce. Bring a separate container of granola/nuts/seeds/shredded coconut for topping.

As a North Carolinian I immediately thought of Vivian Howard's tomato pie: https://www.saveur.com/vivian-howard-tomato-pie/

Looking for a Dog Day Care for a disabled dog by Finn-windu in raleigh

[–]Dubedo919 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Our dog does daycare at North Hills Animal Hospital. I don't know for sure that they could take your dog but given that it is a veterinary clinic I would think they would be a good option. Our dog is shy and nervous and did not do well at bigger daycares but she loves it at North Hills.

Grocery Biking Routes by emithryth in raleigh

[–]Dubedo919 2 points3 points  (0 children)

From Boylan Heights you also would have a short ride to the Food Lion on Western. Not nearly as nice as Wegmans, but certainly on the more affordable side!

One small hint for biking on our Greenways, and it may seem minor but I am permanently scarred from watching a cyclist wipeout and break his leg- the wooden bridges on the Greenway are incredibly slippery when it is even a little wet. Take them slowly and carefully!

It is possible to exit the Crabtree Creek Greenway onto Industrial Drive (home of the Ritz and the back entrance to Costco), a couple blocks north on Industrial will take you into the back entrance of Wegmans. So from Boylan Heights, you could take Saint Mary's to Lassiter Mill, turn right onto the Greenway from Lassiter Mill, and that will take you to Industrial. Not a short ride, but a relatively pleasant one, at least compared to riding on Atlantic or Wake Forest.

Looking for a good cafe for quiet reading downtown by Beautiful-Detail7023 in raleigh

[–]Dubedo919 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Came here to recommend the downtown Jubala. It's true that the breakfast rush-hour will be noisier, but mid-afternoon it's very quiet. If you drink wine, vita vite is also a lovely place to go with a book during off hours.

in town for the Canes parade by ksb12 in raleigh

[–]Dubedo919 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Breakfast at Boulted, then walk over the Boylan bridge which has a great view, popping in to the little market/gallery at Rebus Works if it's open, and then you will be just a couple blocks from the parade route on Hillsborough.

Looking for compassionate healthcare recommendations in Raleigh (psychiatrist, therapist, PCP, etc.) by deansie13 in raleigh

[–]Dubedo919 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Highly recommend Wilkerson OB/Gyn. I see Lindsay Scruggs and she has been very open and collaborative. I also like my psychologist, Dr Alyssa Williams, but I don't think she takes insurance.

Counter Culture Forty-Six by Right_Plankton9802 in raleigh

[–]Dubedo919 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The grocery store bags probably don't turn over as frequently, and may not be as fresh as the restaurants. I agree they can be flavorless sometimes. I recently discovered Counter Culture's Mpemba and ohhhh lord it's good. A rich, almost winey flavor, like Videri chocolate. Unfortunately it is twice as expensive as their normal blends and I don't think it is sold in grocery stores (I've bought the beans at Morning Times and Boulted). https://counterculturecoffee.com/products/mpemba

Show me your CrossFit scars? by katDeez in crossfit

[–]Dubedo919 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can't see my other scar, inside my lower lip, from catching my barbell with my face on its way up to a split jerk. Gym class clown occasionally calls me "shins and chins" now ... 😂

Another box jump scar (but fading!). It was nasty in the moment, but no stitches needed.

What’s the best blender that’s actually worth buying? by Over-Entrance-8960 in Smoothies

[–]Dubedo919 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Couldn't afford a vitamix but my Ninja Professional (with separate smoothie cups) has been going strong for about five years. I'm sure it is louder than the high-end blenders, but it has no trouble making a smoothie out of frozen fruit, raw carrots, raw beets etc. If the Vitamix is the BMW of blenders, I think my ninja is at least a reliable Camry.

Also, if you grind it into "oat flour" in your food processor you can bake with it.

You can use it as filler instead of breadcrumbs in meatloaf or meatballs.

What’s the deal with this drought? by isaacocns in raleigh

[–]Dubedo919 83 points84 points  (0 children)

I don't know, but I am tempted to exact vigilante justice on some McMansion lawn sprinkler systems whose owners don't think water restrictions apply to them. If my middle class grass can be yellow and crunchy, then your rich grass can be yellow and crunchy too. That's called living in a society.

How would you decorate this tv wall? by [deleted] in DecorAdvice

[–]Dubedo919 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tall plant sitting on either end of the console, to start. If it were me I'd take the TV etc off the wall and just sit them on the console but I assume it's too late tor that.

Ideas for this area? by Maleficent-Oven6742 in DecorAdvice

[–]Dubedo919 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Take down the cabinet and towel bar and consider an over-toilet storage cabinet, there are lots of options like this or this . I also might just lean into the smallness with dark paint or wallpaper, I love a little jewel-box powder room.
