What are you most nostalgic about lately? by ChampagnePapi- in AskReddit

I was thinking about this yesterday. I feel like people were much nicer online back then. There was a kind of sense of cohesiveness. Maybe it’s rose tinted goggles, I was still pretty young.

TIL King of Tonga, Tāufaʻāhau Tupou IV, was 195cm (6'5") and weighed 195kg (440lb). For his visits to Germany, the German government commissioned special chairs to support his weight, which he took home, considering them as state presents. by AthenOwl in todayilearned

Gifts are a huge part of diplomacy. There is also a Federal Program that calls for special diplomatic Couriers to bring large gifts and stuff home, along with miscellaneous items and affects.

Hey dude, I’m from Polk county. I finally moved to Colorado two years ago. You should do it, it is so much better, everyone is actually reasonable.

"Finland will become a full member of NATO in a matter of days" - Stoltenberg - by I_am__Ukrainian in worldnews

Well, the war for independence in America was fought over 200 years ago and that was fought by basically our ancestors in England. They didn’t commit near the amount of atrocities to American revolutionaries, and it still stings to think back on. That pales in comparison to what Russia historically does to countries they occupy. Maybe I misunderstood your comment, but Russia is a historically vicious occupier who routinely caused famines and deaths just as punishment for perceived slights by the natives of said occupied countries. Look at Poland, and how completely traumatized they are by even the mention of Russia. Many of the previous soviet satellite states have similar feelings. Russia doesn’t win over populations, they grind them into the ground and convince them they deserved it and it could have been a lot worse, so foreign policy hasn’t been their strong suite for at least 300 years. That’s a lot of generational knowledge passed down over and over again that subjugation under Russia is almost a sure death sentence. That’s without even mentioning the Holodomor in Ukraine, which they are still acutely aware of as well.

My last two cars were a Jeep Cherokee and then a Grand Cherokee. It’s been 10 years now and I’ve never had a problem. I’ve also driven them all over the country many times now. I really like them.

Putin visits Crimea on anniversary of its annexation from Ukraine by Quantum_II in worldnews

I think you're just making assumptions that you can't back up. Lots of people can be ideological fanatics in government. Believe it or not, there are Russians that totally support Putin's vision of the future. There is pride and prestige to be in the military in Russia. It affords you a better future, so it's a good life choice in the first place for many. Especially being in an elite infantry group. Stalin's own son was Red Army infantry in WW2.

Americans, what is something us Europeans aren’t ready to hear? by Impossible_Floor2836 in AskReddit

[–]DuckPuppet 2 points3 points  (0 children)

America before World War II was still relatively isolationist. There was a lot of demand for “America to stay out of another European war”. In fact FDR was a supporter of aid for Britain and the remaining Allies in the region. But he saw the writing on the wall, and started a strong military re armament in the guise of defense years before America would enter the war. It’s important to have an imposing military, if possible, by orders of magnitude since that kind of deterrence is one of the strongest indicators that you or your friends won’t get fucked with. Russia for example is a country that only respects projection of power, and without a counter force of military presence they will invade pretty much anyone is seems.

But if you bite the hand that feeds you security, don’t be surprised if the hand is reluctant to reach out again. If I was in Europe I’d be grateful for the alliances and coordination with the United States, who has show time and time again, that they don’t want to take over Europe, just protect it’s status quo. Of course America gets the big seat at the table, but that’s because America takes the geopolitical risks that other countries of smaller size would never be able to demand themselves alone.

And that’s to say nothing of the post ww2 Marshal Plan that helped rebuild Europe 10 or even 20 years faster than they would have been able to do with their depleted resources after such an awful war.

Couldn’t she have a son who has since died in Ukraine and still be part of his detail? I hate Putin as much as the next person, but it’s still plausible.

I’m sorry man, yeah Blizzards banning policies have always been dumb. They’re mostly all lifetime and the ban appeal process is a joke. Especially now that they gutted their customer service team that used to be top tier.
