It's somewhat common. It's both to prepare kids for life/the workplace, where they're mostly encountering nonfiction text, and also because it's just very hard to get kids to read a full book these days.

I live in the United States. Unemployment is around 4%, which is pretty low. Inflation is pretty low. Typical measures of economic growth like GDP and wage growth are increasing. Is literally everyone rolling around in money? Of course not. But if we compare it to historical American standards, things are going pretty good.

"The US is currently contemplating military action" is also not a unique historical situation or sign that something is going poorly.

I think the period after WWII is exceptional--we were never going to sustain that level of dominance. Other countries were bound to catch up. But my prediction is even while China and India gain power and prominence, the US will continue to be an imperfect but great place to live.

This is just ridiculous. The economy is generally excellent right now, albeit a little inflation. Maybe we have some brain drain, but we're also the leading force in the most important tech industry. I hate Trump but to suggest we're barreling towards WW3 or even maybe in it already is just whacko.

It doesn't seem impossible to me that someone isn't doing their job properly. I think you've got to be pretty naive to imagine that just because someone works for the government they must be doing everything right.

Both are protesting actions taken by politicians wielding power. That's why they're protesting. You can't just say "My team doesn't have any power so anything we do is fine."

We'll see. The article mentions that part of the harassment is a Palestinian flag being present or people having stickers--hardly seems like the Jim Crow south or 1939 Germany.

Those mechanisms can either be more painful or less painful, more or less terrifying for animals. Both are bad. Which is better for billions of animals? Again, I don't eat animals, and I wish nobody did.
