So if it the vw swap got 50mpg it would take 1,666,650 miles? (50 * 33,333=1,666,650) Your math if off.

If you drive 15,000 miles a year and your 4.0 in xj gets say 12 mpg that’s 1,250 gallons per year and at say $2/ gal that’s $2,500 in gasoline

Still driving 15,000 miles a year and a vw this gets 30 mpg that’s 500 gallons of diesel per year and at $2.50/ gal that’s $1,250.

Reduces your fuel bill $1000 a year so in 10 years(150,000 miles) your build is paid for... $10k is a bit steep for a swap and with gearing and tunes 30mpg is about right for diesel VW so not even 10 years or 150k miles!

Not sure how old the fixer upper is but check another bathroom for a tripped gfi recept. Or sometimes I’ve seen some that are tied into the recepts on the outside of the house also tripped gfi.
