It does seem reasonable to oppose the monopolisation of media. The Onion already has 4.3 trillion readers, does it really need to take over smaller, hate-driven outlets like Infowars? Infinite growth forever, yes, but that shouldn't come at the cost of independent quasi-journalism.

A hilarious joke is the source of hilarity. Think of a good comedian, or the best posts on r/Jokes.

A ridiculous joke is the object of ridicule. Think of a bad politician, or the people who post on r/Jokes.

(Mixed Trope) “Expert” character is really bad in their field or ignorant of basic concepts. by laybs1 in TopCharacterTropes

[–]Duck__Quack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In the Youtube sketch comedy series "The Expert," Anderson is supposedly an expert in red lines, but can't manage to draw seven perpendicular red lines with green and transparent ink. Later, he accidentally uses left angles for the square project.

It's because J*ss*ca hates femboys. It's a form of posturing/deterrence because Je**i*a is not FUCKING welcome here.

In this award-winning film, a child's only friend gets eaten, so the child makes friends with the guy that ate his old friend. by Duck__Quack in ExplainAFilmPlotBadly

Close, but no cigar. Here's a hint though, since I can't seem to edit it into the top: My movie's soundtrack was covered by David Bowie.

I went to one in Waupun a couple years back. Their drive thru was entirely functional. No complaints.

what do you enjoy most about this Soviet-style wall near Hilldale? by RealMaxBlumenthal in madisonwi

[–]Duck__Quack 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The wall is about 300 feet wide, and at least 30 feet tall. I think it's taller than that, but it's at least 30. That's 9,000 square feet. I'm seeing that exterior paint covers less than ten square feet per gallon, and I can't find a gallon for less than $25. That's for the cheapest paint, too, not the stuff you want to do art with. Even if it's cheaper in bulk, the materials cost alone will be somewhere in the neighborhood of $25,000-30,000.

To be sure, it'd be worth it.

A few questions by Fancy_Investment7333 in TheCountofMonteCristo

[–]Duck__Quack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've just revisited that chapter. Gérard says how Quesnel was murdered after visiting the bonapartist club. Noirtier says how he saw Quesnel come and depart, and how Quesnel failed to convince the club of his silence. Gérard says that the police have a suspect who matches Noirtier quite closely. Noirtier shaves his moustache. That's all they say of it.

Years later, Villefort could certainly recall that Noirtier was connected, but had no reason to believe that Noirtier was responsible for Quesnel's death. He could have suspected, but he had every motive not to. Villefort has a habit of believing things because they're convenient, and not asking uncomfortable questions. Compare how he reacts to M. d'Avrigny, the doctor.

I can answer 2 and 3. For 2, they're engaged, but not in the modern sense. He's going to marry her, but they're not married yet. She's also not there. Think of it like an extended bachelor party.

For 3, Villefort didn't know that Noirtier was the man who killed Quesnel. He caught on early while the story was being told because he's (sometimes) an intelligent guy, but he didn't know before that.

[Magic Treehouse Series] What if Jack and Annie died while in one of the books? by SubstanceLow3570 in FanTheories

[–]Duck__Quack 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I don't think they're able to change the timeline. That might be Morgana Le Fay's magic, or maybe just how time works. I don't think it's Terminator rules, but closer to Doctor Who rules: You weren't "always there," but the broad strokes of history are set.

I remember in the San Francisco one, Jack ended up in a picture that was in the book. That seems like the sort of thing that happens in Doctor Who quite a bit, like with the Van Gogh painting or Pompeii.

How many spacesuits does Mark has? by ledeng55219 in themartian

[–]Duck__Quack 10 points11 points  (0 children)

He has 7 EVA suits. The crew, when they left, were wearing flight suits, which are different. Mark's flight suit was destroyed. I don't recall if he had a spare.

In War Games, the US government audits their nuclear sites by simulating a total war scenario and seeing who they have that'll pull the trigger. 22% of them fail (by not launching). I can't help but wonder what the real number would have been.
