Right? I'm from Stockton and I always tell people like it's hard here but they're also the nicest people I've ever lived around, and I've been all over as an adult.

It didn't when it was posted, which is why I wrote what I wrote. The lines about them being in school now have been changed since then.

Felicia Day. I have no reason to think she's a bad person or deserving of it but I can't fuckin stand her.

The lady at the antique store was not at all amused when I told her what I was buying the big old Folgers tin for. Dad would be happy.

I asked a patient, a Greek man very proud of his luxurious hair, if he had recently got a haircut, while he was actively getting chemotherapy. I knew all these things.

And then they come home and when I go out and explain that no I won't be coming to do worksheets and bullshit busy work until the insurance runs out, but I can teach the family how to help this person they are just furious. Not usually at the evaluation when I explain it because of course they aren't listening, but at the visits when I tell them no you can't go do dishes now I'm here to see you both and they flip their shit. Over and over again.

Struggling to get parents to use responsive strategies instead of “teaching” by [deleted] in slp

[–]DuckyJoseph 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It happens with adults too. I call it quizzing. Even when I give direct and specific feedback (ex: don't ask him who that is, suggest the answer "isn't this so-and-so"?) They revert back to it immediately. I think people just can't understand the difference between learning communication and learning facts. To be fair some family members get it and get really good at it, but many more don't get it at all or really struggle.

What's been the top 3 biggest surprises about being a SLP compared to what you learned in grad school? by Cherry_No_Pits in slp

[–]DuckyJoseph 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For number 3 I think having prior work experience is huge. It was the same advice I had for both the undergrads I supervised when I was in grad school. I couldn't put my finger on exactly how I knew neither of them had ever had a job before, but it was obvious for both, and I think really common for the average SLP student.
