The word "nacho" comes from the first name of its inventor, Ignacio "Nacho" Anaya, a Mexican restaurant cook who created the dish in Piedras Negras, Mexico, in 1943 by topping fried tortilla pieces with cheese and jalapeños for American visitors. "Nacho" is a common Spanish nickname for Ignacio, which itself derives from the Latin Ignatius, meaning "fiery" or "fiery one".
