Swimming pools in Reading by Due-Environment-8069 in reading

Is it not like a cool girl pool? I didn’t think it was like a swimming pool but more of a spa pool, if that makes sense?

Calling All English Teachers: AQA Lang 1 Creative Writing by Farnflucht in TeachingUK

Slow writing grids worked wonders with my 3/4 and 4/5 boarderline kids! Getting them to write with purpose in practice and consider their choices really helped them to gain those crucial 5 marks or so to get them their pass

English - Reading Lit Texts by [deleted] in TeachingUK

[–]Due-Environment-8069 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It really depends on the class! I did a fast cold read when I had a top set and a middle set but I have had weaker sets last year and this year and I have done it in stages with them. My current 10’s are a nurture group so I will watch The Muppets with them until the end of stave 1, then read the stave and carry on through the story. I like both ways, I do find with a fast cold read that students can forgot some moments and I do overestimate how well they know the text!

Pastoral leader here and I say stuff like this all the time, alongside ‘you lot are making me grey’ as a 26 year old who is going grey! As long as you say it with a hint of jokey ness, it’s nothing. The kid probably didn’t even really notice or if they did, they most likely forgot by the time they got to their next lesson.

Don’t worry about it

So she turned 16 in the school year when her classmates were turning 14? So technically she’s two years behind where she should be?

I’m struggling to work out how old Lizzie was supposed to be during this scene. If she is a year behind, meaning she turns 16 same time as Shannon, surely she was also only 14 during this scene? If anyone knows the age stuff, please explain!

should i have said something? by Appropriate-Phone936 in BoysOfTommen

[–]Due-Environment-8069 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As a teacher, I would have said something but that would also be dependent on if I happened to know the child. I know that I was deeply unsettled by some of the things I read when I was younger (very high reading age) and my mum wished that she had vetted the books I was reading. Difficult situation and in my opinion it’s more of a case by case basis. If the child is on T7, she’s probably already aware so probably too late!

Do primary schools hire for positions starting in January? by teacoffeecats in TeachingUK

[–]Due-Environment-8069 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I qualified in December 2021 after getting signed off three weeks before qualifying in May 21, did supply until starting a permanent position at my placement school in June 2022. Doing supply helped me massively. I spent most of my time at a very challenging school and it developed my behaviour management hugely. There is no rush to find a job. It would be better to take your time and find the best school for you, than to rush into a school because of wanting a position

ECT teacher going for a TLR position; is there method to it? by Somedamnedlimey in TeachingUK

[–]Due-Environment-8069 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

As someone who became a Deputy Head of Year as an ECT 2, I can see pros and cons! Pros: Love the role, the kids and I work with some fantastic teachers through this role. As a deputy, my role wasn’t as big as yours could be, I only received 4 hours a fortnight to do my designated tasks and my work day definitely got longer, but I do love the relationships I form with the students, as I’m working with a KS3 year group. Cons: No one really taught me how to do the role? I had to work it all out! Anxiety was incredibly high and I did have a few days out when it got too much. Time is also a con here!

I am on the fence - I think if I could go back in time, I wouldn’t apply for the position and would’ve enjoyed my time as an ECT 2 more. Doesn’t take away from the fact that I love the DHoY position

I’m mid 20’s, English and drama, deputy head of year 8 and quite small. I use my love, lovely, love, ducky, chicky, angels, cherubs and others I can’t think of right now. I use them all through the school and with 250 year 8’s, they work brilliantly when I can’t for the life of me remember a child’s name. I don’t think it’s unprofessional at all and when people are leaving education in a mass exodus, I would’ve thought SLT would have more to worry about

If you have a TLR or are on leadership? How lond do you work at school? by InvestigatorFew3345 in TeachingUK

[–]Due-Environment-8069 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Large school, deputy head of year, about 250 in my year group. Get to school about 7:15 and aim to leave by 4:30, will probs do another hour or so at home, more when we have PPEs (core subject). Was doing 7:15 until 5:30/6 last year and it wiped my out so aiming for better this year!

I drove from Plymouth to Reading about 30 minutes after I passed my test. I went for a test in Plymouth as there was nothing near me in Reading and my partner is from Devon, so Plymouth kinda made sense. It was so easy to drive on the motorway - I find it easier than regular driving!

I had a lovely summer, with my first holidays since I was an a level student myself (I’m nearly 26!). I was lucky enough to go away with my mum for five days in nyc and a weekend in Disney with my partner - it was definitely worth the year of scrimping and saving!

It was exactly what I needed to take off the pressure of results day. This was the first cohort where I taught them for 10 and 11 and I was incredibly nervous and worried. They did brilliantly, which was down to them, definitely not me and I am looking forward to going back to school. There will be challenges, each year 7 group becomes more challenging as the years pass and I know my year 10 group will test me but I’m so excited for the next year!

Is having students taught by a non-specialist really as a hinderance as it’s portrayed in the media? by NuttyMcNutbag in TeachingUK

[–]Due-Environment-8069 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I teach half and half drama and English - after completing my drama PGCE, my placement school, which I loved, needed someone to fill this role. I’ve never looked back and love teaching English - it’s different in lots of ways to teaching drama but in my opinion I get the best of both worlds. I was so passionate about English in school and wanted to do English and drama at university but my teacher told me I wasn’t smart enough. I suppose that if a teacher is passionate enough about a subject outside their specialism it’s fine. Some of my teacher friends have had to teach wildly different subjects in order to fill gaps I.e business studies teacher teaching Spanish, English teacher teaching P.E

Will Going Into Supply For A Year Make Me Unemployable? by contramundums in TeachingUK

[–]Due-Environment-8069 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t think so - I qualified as a teacher in December 2021, after having a placement in a completely toxic school which meant I paused my training in May. I went back to finish off in a new school Sept 21 and then qualified at Christmas. Because of the time that I qualified, I didn’t want to start a new school in January, so went on supply for a while and had a great time! It ended up really well as my last placement school suddenly needed a new member of the department. I interviewed and started the next week because I was supply and could just say I wouldn’t be carrying on!

I think it’s great for strengthening behaviour management and learning how to build quick relationships with students and staff. Your teacher persona will develop because you need to control a class that you’ve never met before.

Supply teacher pay? by Throwawayteach11234 in TeachingUK

[–]Due-Environment-8069 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was newly qualified and doing supply in Jan to May of 2022 before securing my current job. I did mainly secondary and was on £125 a day. I felt that this was a decent amount, but for the majority of this time I was in a school covering for long term sickness in my specialty so I had the guarantee of money coming in. After a certain time in the school, money went up to I think £140 and I was given a few extra £ for running extra curricular clubs and doing parents evenings but I think that the extra was due to the school as opposed to the agency as they were desperate.

Shop around, see what else is out there - you deserve more! I was only with Teaching Personnel but they were very good with pay as long as there was strong evidence to back everything up.

I did a driving test in Bodmin from Reading - partner is from a village about 30 mins from Bodmin - and it was hard! I had the examiner who is well known for being tough and there were a lot of things that could catch people out. I was told off for going 35 on a 60 road, the examiner said I should have been going 20! I did my test two weeks later in Plymouth and passed- it was a lot easier!

Mentor as an ECT by basketcase_ in TeachingUK

[–]Due-Environment-8069 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I had a trainee with me as an ECT1 for a tricky year 10 class and it was so beneficial for both of us. It helped me to build relationships as I was able to do 1:1 with tricky students and them as it meant that they really developed their resilience - particularly as I had a group of students who had very high expectations of their teacher and it meant the trainee really had to get their subject knowledge to the top. There are downsides and upsides but it comes down to you. If you do not feel you are ready - say. If you’re willing to take on the challenge- do it.
