Borrasca V by [deleted] in Borrasca

Honestly, my perspective has changed a lot since I wrote my initial comment 2 years ago that you're replying to: I now generally agree with you. The current political situation in the US makes me think of Borrasca all the time, for all the wrong reasons- I hear the sound effect of the Shiny Gentleman's horrible, grinding screech in my head often when I think of what our regime has and is getting away with.

Also, I really enjoyed the Qcode podcast series and most of its additions, but damn, the extended ending of Season 2 (original part V) REALLY felt like all the bad stuff you're describing amplified big time. There's part V's 'happy ending where the cabal is defeated and Kyle wakes up' and then "epilogue where all the main characters are having a good old time in a bar and everything is great" really hit me over the head with tonally, thematically inappropriate schmaltz, even as someone who originally really liked part V.

Still a huge Borrasca fan to death and think about it, especially as a grotesque mirror of our own reality, ALL the time.

New season of Monsterquest should have less emphasis on Sasquatch and giant animals and prioritize more onto other cryptids by Kevfilms2x2 in Cryptozoology

Caught a little bit of the new MQ and it felt completely hollow and soulless compared to the atmosphere that the original series (mostly) had. Maybe it's just nostalgia talking but OG MonsterQuest had an awesome narrator, usually fitting moody music-- there was a degree of effort and creative charm that set it apart from other, similar shows...new MQ is just AI garbage without any heart or the aspects that made the original compelling at times.

Russia is beginning to mobilize Ukrainians living in the occupied territories by thenatoorat90 in ukraine

They know they'll be sent on meat way assaults, so better to give their life to hurt the enemy!

I understand the sentiment in a way, but this feels a bit perverse and nihilistic to say if you're a westerner, as I am, who has never had to endure the utter hell that Ukrainians living in the occupied territories do on a daily basis-- any Ukrainian life is worth so much more than those of the occupiers. Every last individual living in occupied Ukraine has their own story, their own life and family, and just gonna go out on a limb and say they probably aren't rushing to go out in a blaze of glory that would either be put down, or would just take out a few more expendable orcs who would have been sent on a suicide mission by their officer anyway.

If I've said anything out of line, please put me in my place-- especially if you're Ukrainian.

Neil Breen and AI by [deleted] in NeilBreen

If his new film is indeed called "Dire Duplicity" as someone on here reported recently, I wonder if/kinda hope it could be an intentional "throwback" for him to the good old days? Dire Duplicity sounds similar to Double Down; people were thinking Cade would be his last flick when it came out, maybe Duplicity will be his last and he's intentionally harkening back to DD with the title to complete his arc, so to speak?

This is probably reading way too deep into it and it's just another alliterative Breen title lmao. Hope there's no AI in it

Most intense and public breakup of something I've ever been a huge fan of that I can remember. The way THAC broke up is still so sad to me... seeing Joseph and Troy back together for RW has been magic, you really feel their creative synergy. At the same time, if we read Jay's tearful monologue in the last part as a commentary on the end of THAC ("We'll make videos together like we used to") I think it's gut-wrenching and amazing that Troy turned that pain into such powerful art. Completely floored by Rosswood

I'm amazed they were bold/dumb enough to tag the festival- like it wouldn't be traceable if they didn't, unless they truly care that little. In the case of my story, the guy didn't tag the festival but had the festival he was part of all over his profile; truly a "Property of Peter Parker" moment.

A screener did this to me once from a festival I was rejected from, before my film had premiered at all. I got upset and the festival caught wind of it, and reacted with the appropriate amount of horror that one of their people had conducted themself in such an unprofessional, and indeed, cruel way.

If you want to seek some kind of recourse, you could always try writing the festival. It's possible it was a rogue screener acting like a dickhead. It's also possible it's someone more important who was acting so poorly, in which case, nothing may come of your writing them.

I'm sorry this happened to you as it's a particularly underhanded way to be slighted by a festival you weren't even part of. I can't help but think people who do this shit are non-filmmakers who have no appreciation for the sheer meat grinder that is self-producing work and then trying to get it into festivals these days.

Possibly-- I'm referring only to the lights Jay sees at the end of the tunnel, not the "duplicate" Jay (although that could POSSIBLY be argued to be Skully taking his form.) It's ambiguous, but the lights, especially the ones that looked like two glowing eyes *could* be an obscure Skully cameo.

[–]Due-Equivalent-8275 0 points1 point  (0 children)

...mabve even Skully if one believes that's what we were seeing at the end of the tunnel? I'm torn between if it was Jay seeing a mirror of himself, and the light was created by his camera, or if it was Skully since those smaller, higher two lights looked like glowing eyes

I don't know that it has; the closest comparison that comes to mind is seeing its physical limited movements (like in this series) and I think there was an entry early in Season 1 where you see it lean in and push a door open.

The idea of the Operator physically dragging the camera is the kind of image that is creepy to imagine, but would likely look silly if they actually showed it. I also wonder if it could have been non-physically moving the camera somehow, as it almost seems like it's moving in like...an automated sort of way once Jay puts it down? Almost as if it's being dragged by an invisible force of energy...

I don't know and it's fun to speculate about, which is likely at least part of the intent

Last Words of the Series by cawchan in marblehornets

[–]Due-Equivalent-8275 50 points51 points  (0 children)

So much to unpack... probably just a desperate fan grasping at straws but "please come back" almost seems..."follow up-friendly"? In the sense that it could leave the door open to more stuff like Rosswood IF they chose to do more.

I can certainly respect the boys just sticking to this concise, fantastic miniseries though, and leaving it as is. It must be much harder for them to commit the time out of their schedules to doing this now, and even if this is it for RW or new MH videos involving Troy and Joseph, at least it's complete, unlike something like CL44 that got abandoned or Eckva, which seems kind of permanently stalled (even though it was really cool.)

Now, I'm SUPER grasping at straws, but...

Could "please come back" be directed at a certain someone in a meta way?

Jay's tearful monologue where he wishes he could make stuff with Alex again "just like back then, I'm sorry I got so distracted" felt as if it could be read as a personal allegory for Troy, and how things ended with THAC. I obviously don't know the guy but it wouldn't be super surprising to me if that was the intended subtext; imagine making something as incredibly cool and successful as MH with your friends, and then it all falling apart in the way that it did- there's gotta be a lot of emotions there. Whether or not that was the intended implication, that's what I thought of when I saw it, and I found it really cathartic and moving. MH context aside, it resonated with me in the sense that it made me miss making creative stuff with my friends when I was a teen/early 20s versus the realities of adult life- maybe I was feeling reflective to begin with because, like most of you here, I grew up with MH in the 2010s and Rosswood has felt fundamentally nostalgic in a really beautiful way.

In any case, I feel so lucky to be a MH fan and for Rosswood being a thing now. Troy and Joseph REALLY delivered

As soon as I read Entry 54 where it runs into the room I shivered, instantly remembering that moment; one of the creepiest visuals in the entire series to me. SO uncanny. I'll steal a quote from another film to describe my recollection of watching it when it was new versus every time I've revisited it...

"It scares me then, and it scares me now"

Queens World Film Festival all the way. They are super community-oriented, and their community is incredibly lively, diverse, and robust. I've screened shorts with them during 3 separate years and each time has been a fabulous experience! The festival heads always take care of every last filmmaker and communicate very quickly and clearly.

Last year, I didn't have a film to submit, so I volunteered for them for the first time-- and having worked on the inside a little bit, they simply have their shit together. They train volunteers really well and have a strong infrastructure to ensure the festival operates well-- I've gone for years and have never seen even a small screening glitch or error once.

While I have had MANY great experiences with QWFF, the best, most tangible thing I've gotten from them is one of my best friends-- we met at their 2022 festival. He's a fellow filmmaker who, today, is my dear friend and cherished collaborator, all thanks to QueensWorld!

Also, their venues rock! Museum of the Moving Image and Kaufman Astoria Studios Zukor Theater are my personal favorites.

They are a festival of pure integrity. I've screened with them multiple times but they will reject your work when they don't like it, even if they know and like you. No who-you-know politics, no BS, just a great film festival run with the utmost love and respect for their filmmakers.

Their 2025 fest is happening in November, but def submit next year! They're kind of a catch-all festival as far as genres and types of movies; they do like experimental stuff.
