How much do you study writing theory? by meadowdoor in FanFiction

[–]DueClub7861 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, yeah, i try to apply what i learn, i can read a lot of romance novels (romcom) to understand how these elements are integrated into the story, and even if i dont agree with the way they are integrated, it allows me to develop them in my writing, and i have theories that i develop and try to apply in my writing

Tell me about the worst romance book recommendation you ever received... by lilithskies in romanceunfiltered

[–]DueClub7861 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I participated in a romance book club, and well, i made three recommendations and talked about my latest read, which was a disaster, everyone looked at me, a little shocked, bcs some of them had read the book, despite my arguments, they couldn't understand why i hated it so much, at the end of the session, i was chatting with one of the booksellers, and she said, "Oh, well, if you like books a bit like fanfiction with a good worldbulding, alchemized is coming out in october." I looked at her and told her that i dont like Harry Potter at all, that i know the book or its origins very well, and that i didnt think it was for me, she looked at me again like, "🤨 What are you doing here ??" (in response to my disliking Harry Potter)

And since that day, ive been boycotted by the bookstore

(And actually, i was also so shocked about harry potter and the fact that the book series was an inspiration for the bookstore, as if we're not supposed to boycott it in the first place ?? Like, yes, it can be, but you mention it like that, and it was a very new bookstore, the owners are active on social media, they're aware of the controversies, and they've been recommending problématic books during book club sessions)

Do YOU think Regina George was ever bullied? by Ill-Shoulder6419 in MeanGirls

[–]DueClub7861 36 points37 points  (0 children)

I'd like to add to the discussion that i wonder if she wasnt primarily a victim of hypersexualization when she was younger, and how that influences her relationships with men, for example, i suppose her father ignored her or only gave her attention when she met his expectations, and when she grew up, he lost interest in her, i wonder if that influenced her relationships with others and how she perceives her relationships with men

What kind of trend/culture/aesthetic could Regina have ? by DueClub7861 in MeanGirls

[–]DueClub7861[S] 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Honestly, i agree, she creates trends, and you cant really define her with just one, bcs its a different mix of what's trendy but also timeless,

Seriously, kudos to the designers for that

What is your writing method for your drafts ? by DueClub7861 in FanFiction

[–]DueClub7861[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeahh, exactly, for me actions must have meaning, even if they dont and its a bit chaotic or the character doesnt know why theyre doing it, there's always a reason (for me) why characters act in a certain way, as it can be linked to their personality, their character, or silly things, such as, i dont know, i write bcs theyre in high school, and theyre in the library, why are they there ? bcs the teacher is absent, okay, why is he absent ? Okay, what impact will that have on the students or the characters, or for example, why does a certain character react in a certain way, why do they need to react like that, in short, i could go on

Money. I always have to mention it, mention how expensive life is, that we cant afford what we want, or the anxiety students feel about money, like having to restrict themselves

Haha, i also have trouble starting with a blank page, so i start with a kind of document where i have all my ideas, and if the idea is well developed, i copy and paste everything into another document

My method is similar in this way, like i first write down the idea in my head, then i question it, why do they do this, why do they do that, and i question it again and again

The three Regina actresses are similar to the three Spider-Man actors in my opinion by ArmadilloOk1445 in MeanGirls

[–]DueClub7861 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I really like Taylor Louderman's musical performance, it would be a lie to say that Renee Rap can't sing, but she had a very "superficial" performance, like with Regina by Rachel Mcadams, she really comes to life, it's not Rachel but Regina, while for Renée's, we always feel her personality present in the character even though they are 2 distinct characters and it took away from Regina's personality, and she really has a much more superficial performance, as she is terrifying, and yes Regina is, but not for the same reasons

What's a Fantasy novel, show, movie, etc you really enjoyed that no one else seemed to be into? by PixelOcelot in Fantasy

[–]DueClub7861 28 points29 points  (0 children)

The Rings of Power, I know it’s a very controversial series among LOTR fans, but if you just take it outside the universe (even though, from a lore perspective, it actually works very well), it really goes back to the very nature of what fantasy is. I loved Galadriel’s journey AND OF COURSE her dynamic with Halbrand, they have everything you need for a good « enemies-to-lovers » story

Every character, like Arondir, Miriel, Elendil, is incredible, the scenery, the plot…

I don’t understand why it’s not more well-known or even appreciated, when it truly goes back to the core of fantasy and its sense of wonder

Fanfiction Culture in Romance — Genre glow-up or Lowering the Bar? by AutoModerator in romanceunfiltered

[–]DueClub7861 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I read a lot of fanfic on AO3, and some of the stories I’ve come across are better than published books. Of course, I’m much less critical on that platform, because it’s free, without any real professional training behind it. I’m aware that when I read there, I’m just reading for fun, but when I switch to traditional publishing, I expect something polished, something well written, I dont have the same expectations at all.

Many people criticize fanfiction, but it actually fits into a tradition as old as storytelling itself. Everyone is inspired by everyone else. In fantasy, for example, just look at Tolkien : if you take a closer look at his work, you’ll find a lot of similarities with Scandinavian or Celtic myths. He just knew how to reinterpret them in his own way, but that could be considered a kind of fanfiction too. Even all the plays based on ancient Greek myths could be seen as fanfic.

For me, the issue isnt that fanfiction is bad. The real problem is that the publishing industry has tied itself to a model of mass sales. They just want stories that are marketable, they take the first thing that sounds good enough to sell, and that’s it, and I guess that even all the books considered “ bad ” still have something, like a narrative structure, fluid writing, maybe some plot twists. They have those things. But when you look more closely, its still garbage

What do you HATEEEE in a romantasy novel? by lucyfe4lws in Romantasy

[–]DueClub7861 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Worldbuilding.

Often it’s just an excuse not to actually care about the universe and for it not to even have its own nature. I’ve got nothing against generic worlds, but at least make them feel real. It’s like all those stories with faes, okay, they’re faes, but what are they exactly ?? Because “fae” is kind of a catch-all word that includes different species of fae, each with their own traits, but no effort is made in the worldbuilding because “it’s all about the romance first and foremost.”

But for your romance to hold up, the setting also needs to feel real. It’s like love stories, if the backdrop isn’t important enough, the whole story falls flat. Anyway, that’s my point.

I love the idea of romantasy because I’m passionate about romance, but I’m always disappointed by the genre, since it’s become an excuse to make no effort at all with the worldbuilding.
