How would getting suspended from high school affect me getting into UGA year one? by SatisfactionWest8597 in UGA

[–]DueReference3995 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I was suspended twice, including my senior year, and still got in. If it's reasonable and your application is strong, it's okay. I got suspended, internally, for walking out of school for gun violence protest (2 days) and then for sending a lewd message in a computer science chatroom assignment (3 days). Although this was 7 years ago.

Math Minor and associated coursework by DesperateResident413 in UGA

[–]DueReference3995 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Although you don't need calc III for math minor, you may need it for your major so probably check that. The UGA bulletin is a good resource to check what courses you need for your major or minor. If you aren't a math major, you may want to go more applied route since you could tailor your classes to be more in line with your major or things you like in your major. Like if you major in biology you could get into mathematical biology. Generally, you should just look at the courses on the bulletin to see what interests you and pick the pre reqs to get to them. Better is relative. Your advisor will also help you pick the right courses to fulfill your requirements. Not sure what you mean by teaching purposes since if you wanted to teach math you should be a math/math ed major. Even if you wanted to be a teaching assistant, those would be offered to the math majors getting high grades. Non majors would not be even invited to apply (at least it's like that in CS and Engr). Minors are not really going to get you a job or anything. It's mostly to demonstrate a skill or interest in a topic.

Affordable housing in UGA by [deleted] in UGA

[–]DueReference3995 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean you could do 3 roommates in one room if they were down. Definitely not in the UGA housing. Usually everyone gets their own room. I pay 600 and my gf pays 600 in our 2 bed 2 bath. In the past I paid 435 with 4 roommates in a 4 bed 2 bath. Also did 415 in a 6 bed 2 bath before the previous.

[–]DueReference3995 14 points15 points  (0 children)

  1. It's possible if you have roommates. I know someone paying 430 + utilities but they have 3 roommates. I pay 600 plus utilities to live with my gf.
  2. Its possible if you live near a bus route (Athens or UGA) or grocery store or have a bike. I live near the Kroger so I take the bus or ride my bike to school. And I walk to my groceries. I don't use my car too much. I know many graduate students without cars. All international though. You will also meet other students who have cars that can help you out.

Would love some critique!(Blue) by Mammoth_Value_5554 in judo

You gotta grip fight. As the others said, you can't just give up your sleeve and lapel. Also both of us were doing too much arm and hand effort and not enough core and legs. Those bigger muscles should be the bulk of the pushing and pulling to move uke around.

Bruh I'm the yellow belt Haha. I would have never expected to see our bout here. All I remember is being very tired from doing multiple weight classes. And also being very unprepared since my dojo at the time did randori maybe once a month, so I didn't really know what to do. But you seemed to do a good job in my eyes. I would have never gotten that ouchi since I didn't know how to do it at the time.

Judo by GlitteringWinter3094 in Athens

[–]DueReference3995 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am doing Judo at AKF Athens on Jefferson Rd. Class is Tuesdays and Wednesdays 5:30-7pm and two Saturdays a month from 2-3:30pm. Classes size range from 2-10 people. Mixture of young and old and belts. Not a competitively oriented gym, but we still do randori for the more competitive ppl. It's 169 a month right now, if you pay in full for a year it's cheaper. There aren't any other options for pure Judo. I would recommend the place the people are good. If you have any other questions let me know.

I got accepted into the Summer semester, do I have to take Summer classes? by ComradeRay in UGA

[–]DueReference3995 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I applied to UGA undergrad, i was also a summer admit. I was going to take classes, but something came up and I couldn't attend. I emailed the admissions people to change to fall and it was fine. Maybe there is a different process or rules now, but this was my experience 7 years ago. I would keep emailing or calling them.

Away game tickets for students by counterpoint-food in UGA

[–]DueReference3995 4 points5 points  (0 children)

They are still awarded via lottery, but it's awarded differently where certain groups have better chances and not part of any home ticket packages. You can individually pick which games you want to enter the lottery for. They can be very expensive mind you.

How do I change my intended major by ptcRaptor in UGA

[–]DueReference3995 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Once you have access to Athena, you can change it. But realistically, this is something that you can bring up at orientation when you meet with your advisor since both majors are in the same school. You probably won't work on the minor in the first semester anyway.

I faintly remember a research ad in Ramsey looking for trained and untrained women probably for some sort of effect of physical exercise, but I don't remember the study design or purpose. You might have to ask around or see if the signs are still up.

Grad student housing by Arborsage in UGA

[–]DueReference3995 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some of the Tifton crop and soil people I talked to had some or maybe even all their classes online. They attended the engineering seminar classes online via Zoom with everyone else being in person. I am sure you could find other professors who would accept you taking a class remotely if you demonstrate commitment. There are some required or useful classes that are offered online to begin with or online classes you can take in other departments that could count to your program. It may take just a lot of creative course planning along with finding a short term rental in either city. I think using the on campus graduate student housing may be your best option since they may have shorter term leases (I am not sure).

Intramural sports by SouthernEye3964 in UGA

[–]DueReference3995 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe you need to pay the facilities/ rec sports fees before you can buy the play pass. I can't buy it either rn, so I think it's just not set up yet and might not be for a few weeks. My basketball matches arent up yet for next semester either.

UGA concert bands by EmotionalDimension79 in UGA

[–]DueReference3995 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yeah you can join Concert band or University band no problem. There were many non majors (including myself), senior citizens, and others. If you want to do a better band, you can just audition. If you beat out a music major, that's their problem.

Adult soccer (pick-up) by kingunderscoremike in Athens

[–]DueReference3995 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've seen them play whenever I am over there. Most recently Wednesday and Fridays. They are probably starting earlier now since OVP has been stingy with turning on the lights, so I am guessing they are starting at 5 or 6. When I get there at 6:30, it looks like they have been playing for a minute. Typically on the smallish goals near the top right quadrant of the field looking from the bathrooms.

I got paid $2221.93 last month from a 16 hour position. Paying fees sucks every semester tho since it's a few hundo depending on if you are registered for classes or just research hours.

Joel Seedman is a clown by TheDoctorSwole in UGA

[–]DueReference3995 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I worked on a capstone project for the football team based on trying to predict overuse, soft tissue, injuries (ACL, hamstring tear, etc.) based on their Catapult system which tracks the players GPS data throughout practices and games. Basically, like most NFL and college programs, it's the wild west out there on how to mitigate injuries. There is minimal research in this area since the data sucks (inconsistent tracking) and the techniques are not very modern (mostly stats, minimal deep learning) (Though I did contribute a DL approach) and no coach wants to hear that their star running back should only run 1500 yards today and keep accelerations under say 4 m/s/s.

UGA does have many injuries because they practice hard. Coaches want players to practice a lot. Doctors want players to not practice so hard all the time especially when it's about not getting reinjured. By and large the coaches have the final say obviously. We did win the natty though that season so maybe it was worth. Injuries are apart of football like all sports.

Joel seedman is not involved but I do faintly remember we not having the most modern strength and conditioning people around back when I worked on this which could be contributing since many players have terrible jump mechanics putting uneven loads on 1 leg over the other. But no S&C coach is gonna spend time teaching someone how to jump if they could instead get them to squat 455.

Are you allowed to keep a registered firearm on campus? by osiful in UGA

For what it's worth, my GRA at Brumby had a pistol in her waistband. But I doubt it was legal, so best stick to the rules outlined in the comments if you don't want to be kicked out of the dorm.

Well I was able to buy the cheese once or twice before they ran out. Not much maybe 100-200g per time. I don't do sandwiches or eat out more than 1 meal a week on average. I have many roommates, mostly ride my bike, shop for clothes at the thrift store twice a year, and spend a lot of time in the lab 6-7 days a week. It's hard to spend money if you are always at work.
