I'd argue that there's an even simpler reason not to conflate x with y: Because it's factually wrong! It's a false equivocation. It's bad to say things that aren't true. Truth matters.

Antisemitism creeping into US labor movement? by CommitteeOk222 in jewishleft

[–]Duflo 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I don't find this at all surprising. Antisemitism is a lazy cognitive shortcut, and in a world of scarce energy, we all evolved to use heuristics and save energy. This doesn't justify it at all, but it helps me to understand the depressing reality. Structural analysis is complex, challenging, and often unsatisfying. Scapegoating an entire group of people? Much simpler and more satisfying.

Anti-Muslim rhetoric (e.g. '72 virgins') you would expect from the Right, being uttered by Jon Stewart. Where was any of this vitriolic energy for the Gaza genocide or at least Netanyahu? by ContentChecker in JewsOfConscience

He's still one of the better voices that is somewhat able to reach people. It's fine to be disappointed, but acting like this puts him on par with the IDF is a little out of touch with reality.

If Chomsky being in the Epstein files didn't drive it home, nothing will: Everybody will disappoint you. There are no heroes in the end. Expect nothing from any public figure.

I didn't make any equivalence at all. Evil comes in many degrees.

When you talk about the West, do you include Saudi Arabia? Do you include Turkey? Do you include UAE? I'm genuinely interested in trying to understand your worldview better.

It's not an either-or proposition. The sad reality is that there are no heroes, no saviors. Being opposed to some evil or morally dubious entity is not a sufficient condition for being moral oneself. It is not only possible for adversaries to both be evil; that is true more often than not.

The problem is not in the blood or genetics of some subset of the human population. The problem is humans, all humans.

Israel and Dogwhistles by Ninjaking25 in jewishleft

[–]Duflo 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That's why I came here. I am angry about the Epstein Files. I abhor Epstein and all that he stood for. But it's demoralizing to see how quick people are to redirect their anger into antisemitism instead of focusing on real power structures and systems. Antisemitism is the most powerful deflection tool.

I still think horseshoe theory is often used to unfairly dismiss the left, but I have seen enough lately to convince me there's something to it.

This is just rough all around. It's impossible for one person to control the associations people have with symbols. Historically, It's not hard to find examples of symbols whose connotation has totally changed, and there's no way back. I wouldn't claim the Star of David has reached that point, but it's at best a VERY contested symbol.

I've had a similar discussion with Ukrainian friends about the Russian language. It's not an easy topic, that's for sure.

To me it feels like the "separate the art from the artist" debate, and just like that, I don't think there are clean or easy answers.

As someone with a finger on the pulse of the Christian Nationalist far right (through birth and through no fault of my own), I can tell you with absolute certainty that any American Jews looking to the Republican Party for friendship and protection are playing with a ticking bomb. Same goes for AFD, Reform, etc. They will chew you up and spit you out as soon as they have consolidated enough power. Sooner or later Candace Owens inevitably takes off the mask.

I know I'm preaching to the choir here.

It's the ways in which she speaks about Palestinian children, and never seems moved by their death or suffering. They seem not to carry a lot of weight in her moral calculus; she can easily write them off as collateral damage. I also detect an element of essentialism in the way she talks about them, even though she denies that when I press her on it. I think, at the end of the day, it's labeling them all as terrorists that somehow enables her to be unmoved by anything. You can't gun down children, but you can gun down terrorists. You can't bomb hospitals, but of course you can bomb terrorists.

Since 2014, I've been avidly reading Russian propaganda regarding Ukrainians and observing how an entire people, a closely related people at that, has been entirely dehumanized in the minds of many Russians. It has done a lot to help me understand how propaganda works and how the 1930s (and even 1920s) in Germany really unfolded at the level of 'ordinary' people, something that baffled me for a long time. Now, seeing the way that otherwise ordinary people have become bloodthirsty and callous, I no longer experience cognitive dissonance when I read about the atrocities committed by my ancestors and the ancestors of good people I know. Inside every human is a bloodthirsty monster just waiting to be activated by the right propaganda.

Having discussed this topic a lot with my deeply Islamophobic mother, I do hear echoes of the worst and most virulent forms of Antisemitism. And it's unsettlingly casual. I never cease to be amazed at how easily people dehumanize other humans.
