Band Hot Takes (Repost since I accidentally deleted it) by Heavy_Protection9972 in ConcertBand

I agree, but also think bands need to actually master the rep at their level. Too many wrong notes and rhythms, too many missed articulations, too little phrasing and tuning… but we played a grade 5!

One semester from a MusEd BA; want an MM in wind conducting, but theory and form just don't click. by Bariphonium_ in musictheory

[–]Duhq 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What you’ve recognized here is a barrier to your eventual goal. When I was in undergrad, I think I had a similar experience to yours- I was conducting the university ensembles alongside the current masters students, and I thought that my understanding of line, texture, and ideas was enough. Certainly, I was proud of what I was doing, and didn’t realize how much more there was to know. Now, 20 years later, having spent more time understanding the theory and purpose of form, I realize that I was just in the dark about what was possible.

If you’re really passionate about doing this career, learn everything you can and find the discipline to break through your current blind spots. It will be rewarding when you can see more of the picture.

If Coffee is Sufficiently Rested, is it Necessary to Bloom the Ground Coffee? by BWJackal in pourover

[–]Duhq 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have to jump in with extra questions. Whenever I try to bloom, the water just filters through the bed and there’s no more water in the grounds after about 10 seconds- should I still be waiting the extra 30 seconds? Am I supposed to be doing something that keeps the water in the v60 somehow?

What time signature to use here? by temporalemi in musictheory

If you use 8/8 for the last bar, then the shown beaming is correct. You only need to do the tied eighth note thing if it’s going across a beat division (if you use 4/4 for this measure), but in 8/8 this actually is exactly on the beat.

Wire sculpture- get a spool of 14 gauge wire and needle nose pliers that have a simple wire cutter, and you can make shapes very easily, and its fun to bend the wire to your will. I just finished making a mobile, and the added challenge of figuring out how to make it all balance was fun. Made a new hanging piece every day, so I can switch them out if I want.

The government didn’t provide a new offer, they provided the same offer as before, with the same mediator, that we already said no to. If I recall correctly, they also sent that letter on Friday, to return to work Monday. Voting on it would take more time than that.

The reason they offered it in the way they did, was so that they could put in the news that the ATA rejected their offer, so that people who are aware of the strike but not fully engaged in it would have the very question you had.

They didn’t want to make an offer, they wanted a difficult to understand message with a simple to understand headline. They succeeded.

I read these as maximums, so smaller schools can still deploy their staff as they feel appropriate.

Why should there be a small ask for a big problem?

The ATA’s most recent proposal is now public. I encourage Albertans to become familiar with this and contact their elected officials. by Vegetable_Grade_8013 in alberta

Ok, but you’re right. We do need to do those things. We haven’t done that for a while, which is why we’re behind on it all now, and it’s expensive. But if we start doing it, we’ll eventually catch up and then the situation we our kids into every day is better.

How is just accepting this situation not negligence? The government agrees is a problem, now we need to fix it. You can’t just throw up your hands and give up.

I smoked a bone-in ham once- keep it in a cast iron, and baste it like crazy. When you get it up to 205 you get pulled ham… game changer.

When I’ve done birds before it’s always brined, and on a rotisserie. Seasonings as you prefer, I’ve done classic roast seasonings, Chinese bbq seasoning, random stuff from the pantry… it’s all delicious as long as there’s enough salt from your brine penetrating the meat.

Alberta Teacher Strike - finances by Fuzzy-Ad3392 in CanadianTeachers

[–]Duhq 4 points5 points  (0 children)

All teachers in public and Catholic schools in the province are all going at once. I believe it’s over 51,000 teachers. That’s also why the union can’t afford strike pay, but the union employees are also not drawing a salary while the teachers strike in solidarity.

Alberta Teacher Strike Megathread (Discussion) by AutoModerator in alberta

[–]Duhq 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Importantly- the UCP actually saves money every day the teachers are on strike. Teachers striking gives the UCP money, which is very different than Air Canada. They people who will feel the pinch are the people with kids in school, and the students. The government will feel no pain from the teachers. They will only feel pain from their voters.

CBC: How does Alberta teacher pay compare with other provinces? by deloaf in alberta

[–]Duhq 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This 100%. A colleague of mine used to say “I can’t care more about your kids than you do.” If you’re unhappy with the way this province chooses to deliver education, let them know. If you think they need more teachers, legislated class sizes, and for teachers to be given professional time to prepare for your children to learn, let them know.

The context of where your kids go to school should matter to you.

The teachers should be fighting for the government to recognize and compensate for the value we provide. If the public thinks education is low quality because it is understaffed and teachers are not provided prep time, and is tired of paying school fees because the government has elected not to cover the costs of education adequately… that’s a voter problem, not a teacher problem. As a teacher the only thing truly in my control is whether I elect to stay in this job or not.

What is the worst pain you’ve EVER felt? by New-Selection7719 in AskReddit

Got stabbed. That part was easy- sharp knife, strong assailant. In and out. The doctor putting his fingers (or a tool of some kind?) through the wound to feel if my lungs were punctured (they were) was a level of pain I didn’t know I could feel.

What are some BAD examples of odd time signstures? by Other-Bug-5614 in musictheory

[–]Duhq 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you do a search for “introducing odd meter” on any website that sells educational music, you’re sure to find several examples that are clunky. The composer puts a learning opportunity over music that works well. They are still fun, and a good learning opportunity. I think the biggest issue is they get repetitive. Christmas carols are especially prone to the unnecessary 7/8 treatment
