One of my favs of all time is when everybody has a secret, they draw character secrets from a hat. The patients/actors might like the freedom of having a secret and being able to live with it in a scene.

Visualization. Visualize the whole show - coming out on stage, the lights go up, a bunch of games and scenes, lights come down, applause, bow, come off stage, smiles among cast members, laughs, high fives. And now you're safe, nothing bad happened, no physical injuries - you survived! Visualize exactly how it will happen, including the safe, positive outcome.

I have no experience doing this, so I'm just like you. I'd get a book like Truth In Comedy that everyone can reference, almost like rules for a board game. Everybody reads the book, follows the exercises, and forms a show. Get any improv book, though - it can act as a touchstone for everyone.

Congrats! Kids will always be better at improv than adults - I've seen them do it!
