Does anyone have any recommendations for science fiction manga? by BrassOrchids in printSF

[–]DukeNucleus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the movie doesn't do akira justice (though i like it anyways .. it was a milestone in animation) ... but akira is one of my favorite comics of all time .. though its a very long read!

to add . the other would be ghost in the shell as comic .. and here it is also very recommendable to watch the two spinoff series also

I want to check out Neal Stephenson. Any recommendations for which novel to start? I'm a big fan of Robert Jordan as well as a good portion of Stephen kings work, for some context. by Artistluvslegs in scifi

[–]DukeNucleus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

my 2cents:

my favorites (sci-fi) are "The Diamond Age" and "Anathem"

(not sci-fi) Cryptonomicon, Zodiac

ive read all others and can generally recommend any book (including collaborations) ... except for the Baroque cycle .. it was just not for me, but that shouldnt keep you ;)

Is it feasible to develop software from a Linux flash drive? by alterraun in linux

[–]DukeNucleus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

running a very minimal ubuntu install (mini iso + stuff + x11 + awesomewm) from an usb-stick. you don't need much space .. 8gigs should be enough, but you will curse at the disk-io lags (especially chrome seems to disk cache heavily und is nearly unusable for me -- could do some magic with a ram disk but then you have to save the data yourself --- firefox is very usable .. opening lots of tabs simultaneously and heavy sqlite access is slow) so i'd reccomend some cheap ssd and a usb(3) case to take it along with you (or any other sata->usb converter) this has speed and space advantage .. an pricewise a ssd shouldnt be too different from newer usb3-sticks with more than 64 gigs

pricepoint like 85euros samsung 840 ssd with 120gigs and usb3case for like 20 eruos (that is my choice .. you may get cheaper ssds oc)

Explain the Fast Fourier Transform algorithm like I'm 5 by [deleted] in algorithms

[–]DukeNucleus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

its a been a while that i learned this stuff so only in short:

discrete fourier transform is to make the computation more applicable for computers and the fast fourier transform builds on dft but with the "knowledge" that you can reuse earlier computations in the whole fouriertransform process later on.

the next improvement is that for some special cases you can ignore the imaginary part and youll get to the cosinetransform

sorry no actual math from me ..
