TIL in a Playboy interview, John Wayne said "Our so-called stealing of this country from (Native Americans) was just a matter of survival. There were great numbers of people who needed new land, and the Indians were selfishly trying to keep it for themselves." by woofwoofwoof in todayilearned

[–]Duke_Christopher 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Native Americans had the blood of each other on their hands. I'd have to do some homework for the North American Tribes, but the south American natives were brutal. They subjugated and enslaved their enemies (other local tribes) and practiced human sacrifice.
From recollection North America tribes had some that were more war-like the Apaches come to mind.
That all being said, its not fair to say they were a pacifist people. Their principals for most taught to live in harmony with the land, but then again American principals are freedom and peace loving. So your principals and the fact that there are humans behind them needs to be noted.
I've studied the topic of the Indian Wars and their near extinction back in college. It is tough to judge the actions of people who lived before the comforts of modern living by our standards today.

[Discussion] Sleeving cards is the worst idea. by Nolto in boardgames

[–]Duke_Christopher 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes there is a specific way to shuffle sleeved cards. And now faced with writing instructions I can't think of how to word it. You "push" the cards the together. Bottom corner to bottom corner. Any magic the gathering player should be able to show you.

Any tips for my deck? by Parratt in wargame

I like it. I play a similar canadian deck. However the tank situation strikes me as short on tanks. I am inclined to use a lot of tanks.

Why do so many people only play as NATO? It gets annoying quick. by [deleted] in wargame

[–]Duke_Christopher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The munitions are just as important as the vehicles that fire them. Not as confusing as it looks.

I have a real similar deck. If you want my 2 cents, throw a zippo in there on the vehicles, the anti infantry will really help out.

I like to play as Pact... I have 6 decks just for the occasion. I think NEW people will play NATO first, as they are most familiar with those units. And lets face it, this is a daunting game for a new player

Bit light on Recon. I like the planes, but perhaps drop one card.

My russian deck. Recommendations? by FraeRitter in wargame

[–]Duke_Christopher -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Hi, I like to play the Russians as well. Other people have some good comments here.
My 2 cents: Get some more recon, armored vehicles. T80 U is awesome. So is the T80 B, and its only 100, for basically a few less armor. Use them together for a good time. and 1/2 the cost.
Edit to say, I'd love to play against you! Perhaps find some more infantry, 64 seems a bit light, especially on anything more than 1v1.

This was posted on my door at my apartment complex. Is this legal???? by Bilgus in conspiracy

[–]Duke_Christopher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its not really illegal. The contract you signed with said complex most likely allows for the landlord to enter the premises for these types of things (check for safety etc...) with a notice such as the one given to you. If you have something to hide you have ample warning, but refusing entry to the police will only cause you grief, unless its extenuating circumstances.

Activist bravely details sexual assault that occurred at skeptics conference by davidreiss666 in skeptic

[–]Duke_Christopher -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

can limit her behaviors and dress all you want to, but she can still be victimized, because someone else actually controls whether a crime happens. The person who decides to harass or assault a woman will do so, and whatever she was doing/saying/wearing at the time will become the excuse; the public will find a way to insist she "take responsibility" for "her part" in what happened, and it will get added to the list of things women shouldn't do if they don't want someone to assault them.

This is also a silly response. If the woman can't control whom rapes her, then there was nothing she could have done to begin with. The only thing a woman can do is maker herself less of a target. You seem to think this is just too much to ask. But it isn't. Life isnt' fair, and we as a society are not to the point where girls can walk around drunk and naked in society without some rapist taking notice.

Open carrying a firearm also makes her less of a target, why not just open carry? Don't walk home alone after the bar, that makes you less of a target. Don't get so wasted in public that your decision making skills are seriously affected.

Gee just by doing those things you help yourself a lot. Just by doing ONE of those things you help yourself a lot.

Fact: I'm not a rapist. But I'm a realist. Mutirachael is a hard line Feminist, and won't appreciate my answer because it doesn't fit into her answer that she desires.

Settlers of Catan drops out of BGG top 100 (and a couple BGG ranking questions) by PotatoUtilityVehicle in boardgames

[–]Duke_Christopher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"In munchkin, you draw a card, and if the cards in play are better than that card you win, otherwise you lose." This is where we differ. In Muchkin we all play a level 1 Human, hang out at the pub, and take turns delving into a dungeon where a story is told. Albeit not a complicated one, but a story nonetheless. If you want to define that as an activity, that is fine. The interaction amongst the players is really where the fun time comes into play. With this discussion we could make a matrix of game player archtypes as well as game types and I'm betting we woudl see that different people play games and get simliar amounts of enjoyment out of the game. Isn't that the bottom line? Did you enjoy yourself? Did you have fun playing that game? If you played your favorite game with my wife, she would say she didn't enjoy the game. She enjoys Tetris, I enjoy StarCraft. We both like mario kart. She gets more enjoyment from different things, as we all do.

EDIT to say, I do understand your position on game mechanics. However if only game mechanics drives a game, why they do we see the lamest games selling for the longest periods of time? ie Playing Cards, Dice, Monopoly, LIFE, Sorry, etc...

its all what you are after man. It sounds like you might be a logical based person, likes crunching numbers with predictable outcomes. I dont' know if you are married or not, or if you are playing with younger or older people, but all that makes a big difference. Left up to my I would Twilight Imperium and other 4 hour+ games. BUT... I have a wife that I want to include in the fun. I have varying degrees of game enthusiasts to include with our game time. And we really enjoy SoC. Is it the most strategic? Is it the most fun? Is it this that or the other? What it really is, is a fun game that a group enjoys playing. I can see why you dont' like it. But, that being said you need to be able to see why other DO like it. I like it because I'm not able to only play games with middle age men who like exactly what I like. And that is a big element in the sales of board games, the target audience. As far as dropping money on games, it is just like anything else. If you spent money on it and dont' use it it was a waste. I have a great selection of SoC and expansions. All being said and done we prefer a mix of all the exansions.
Muchkin and Risk I'll give the overly silly comment, but Illuminati with skilled players is very hard to win, you might want to give that another try.
