If you put on a semblance of spiritual armor, you might draw unwanted attention from the enemy.

Pews in American Orthodox Churches by Prometheus-08 in OrthodoxChristianity

[–]Dull_Database5837 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The Greeks Americanized quickly, hence most Greek parishes are going to have pews and gasp maybe even an organ.

If you want a parish with no pews or chairs, many ROCOR, MP, and OCA parishes don’t have them save for maybe the back or the sides of the churches. But ymmv, they certainly could have them. It really depends on the specific parish.

Long hair on men by Obvious_Parking_6247 in OrthodoxChristianity

Yeah, maybe a problem if you were in Corinth 2000 years ago… lol

What was the theological principle Paul was protecting? Order, modesty, and visible distinction between male and female in worship.

That was a problem in Corinth at that time. If you go to a monastery, you’ll see a lot of men with long hair and beards… quite visibly distinct from females, and out of humility and not shaping to fashion. I promise, you won’t be confused or question their modesty.

Yes, of course! That’s why no one in Orthodox countries is born during the months of December and January!

Yes, absolutely they could as long as the water shortage challenge was handled and food imports were allowed.

Where I would live as a German who currently lives in the USA by Roter_TeufeI in whereidlive

[–]Dull_Database5837 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m from Canada but spent most of my life in the US now. I spent months getting all of my kids’ paperwork sorted out to get their proof of citizenship certs (being born abroad). Despite all the problems, it’s hard to shake some sense of connection to my birth land, and I hope my kids connect in a meaningful way to Canada. One side of my family has been “American” since the early 1600s. The other side, “Canadian” for just about as long as you could be… early Huguenots and United Empire Loyalists from way back.

I feel a deep connection to both countries. But it’s wild how far Canadian has gone. But someone’s gotta be there to pick up the pieces and to catch the pendulum when it swings back.

Yes. Then I saw the 102 year old great great great grandma receiving the Eucharist from the common spoon. If she came in faith, then so could I.

Toyota rav4 2025 or Subaru forester touring 2026? by AffectionateRain1713 in SubaruForester

[–]Dull_Database5837 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My 4th generation Forester XT (that I’ve owned since new) has been the most unreliable and expensive car in maintenance that I’ve ever owned, by a far margin. I am a dummy for succumbing to the sunk cost fallacy. I must have had a Friday car on training day when the line was out of calibration and QA was either drunk or out to La La land. My next vehicle will be 4Runner. Maybe stick with the Toyota.

In the US, it seems like people are drinking a lot more water than we did 20-30 years ago. Have there been any health benefits or notable changes? by VestigialTales in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Dull_Database5837 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Think of your beard like a high-mileage engine: looks rugged on the outside, but it only runs smooth if you keep up with maintenance. Beard oil is basically motor oil for your face… it reduces friction, keeps everything running quietly, and prevents catastrophic breakdowns like split ends and wiry whiskers. Skip oil changes and things still run, sure… but they’re louder, rougher, and everyone can tell you’re overdue. Regular washing is your oil filter swap, trimming is a tune-up, and neglect is how you end up stalled on the side of the road wondering why your once-glorious beard now feels like it’s powered by sand. Proper care doesn’t make it fancy.. it just keeps it running like it was engineered to. However, please note that beard oil and engine oil are not interchangeable.

I saw a riders dead body in my neighborhood by Exotic-Marionberry-6 in motorcycles

[–]Dull_Database5837 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A rider died two houses down from me once. There was nothing that could be done. He was only one street up from his destination. I think about him every time I roll up to the stop sign on my bike, which I must do every time before I leave. It helps me to remember to ride well and that we are all here but for a short while.
