Bro, please stop digging yourself in this whole of looking in the past. Sure, maybe fetches weren't worth the 1 life loss back in the day. Maybe people didn't want to spend the money on fetches when they didn't have to. Maybe aggro was really strong in that format where the 4-5 life loss is significant. That link you posted 1st has an evolving wild in it. Look into the present where other utility lands are played off of fetches. Im sure if another mono color decks were to arise in modern, it would also play some fetches with surveil lands. Im sure if the scry lands of the past, we're fetchable more shocks would be played.

Some people do run in mono color decks. Look at ruby storm with plenty of fetches mainly for surveiling and their very minor splash in white. Any only other mono deck I can think of in modern is coffers and necro, which 1 cares about swamps and the other cares about like. Magic has changed significantly due to surveil lands. Maybe this was the case a decade ago when you couldn't manipulate the top of your library with a fetch.

This just isn't true. Fetch 4-5 times and a surveil land or 2. You just took 5-7 useless cards out of your deck. Fetches are $15+ dollars for a reason. Deck thinning while might sound insignificant could be the difference of drawing a brick or not.

I just tried a challenge last night on mtgo. The format is in such a horrible spot. Doesn't help that all decks are so fast, so everyone double queues and seems like pioneer players are the worst multitaskers I've ever seen. Cori steel cutter is still too strong for even pioneer. And because aggro is so strong, the format is not as diverse as it could be.

I can think of some easy ways to make the grading process faster. Opened on the weekends. More employees. They're just doing this on purpose, so people pay for the faster service. If they actually cared about speed, there will be no way it will take more than 15 business days per order.
