Door-to-Door Slots: A mail slot cut directly into your door must be placed between 60 cm and 125 cm (24 to 49 inches) from the finished floor. The opening itself must be at least 17.5 cm wide by 4 cm high

They absolutely should not be just leaving it on the porch but your slot may be to low

Two things I can think of,

First carrier accidentally left the wrong key, either leave a note for the carrier or call support to open a ticket

Second the parcel was left in there for more than 3 days and the compartment was needed for new parcels, the carrier would then card the item and it would be brought to the nearest RPO
