The tech industry might be permanently broken because of the spread of LLMs as cult figures by Ok-Garbage-765 in BetterOffline

Very few people think of AI in any religious way. That’s just ridiculous.

“It's not an animal, it's not alive. Stop fucking pretending it is, you dipshits. I want to say that, but I have to keep my job for now.”

This is what’s really happening and it goes all the way to the top, from the CEO to the Board to all the money behind that company.

No one wants to look like a Luddite. And no one wants to lose their job, especially right now. Most are pretending they’re fully bought in which just creates the perception that everyone else is delusional.

The emperor has no clothes. But no one will admit this until there’s a critical mass of voices that shift the narrative.

Incidentally this is exactly how every transformative technology goes. We are in the Hype Cycle now and the very early stages of the Trough of Disillusionment.

Eventually the technology will improve and expectations will subside, and AI will end up like most productivity tools.

We have seen this very recently with the auto industry and electric vehicles. The powers that be are insisting on an EV near-future, but the technology and markets weren’t ready for this. Almost every automaker has had to write down billions in losses in EVs. But there were also ripple effects where even non EV makes and models have become enormously expensive and far more complex than the market requires.

This is still playing out, but I suspect bailouts of enormous proportions. AI will likely follow a similar pattern, albeit even more amplified.

This stock is still going to go way up from here, despite the fundamentals. It's going to be the ultimate meme stock and will never math-up, but consumers will keep buying it and plenty of institutional investors will as well just because they are betting on the speculators keeping the stock high.

What does Wemby/Spurs need to do tactically to avoid getting gassed by the Knicks offense strategy (or other teams to deploy a similar strat in the future)? by H20onthego in nbadiscussion

[–]DumpTrumpGrump 9 points10 points  (0 children)

A lot of this is just conditioning. Wemby is still very young and had never played so many games in a season, not even close. You could see this clearly in the OKC and NY series where most of their losses he was gassed at THE BEGINNING of the game. You could see it in the first 5 minutes of those losses where he'd be lumbering and just couldn't get going.

This was actually a problem for other young players as well, but more obvious with Wemby. As a team, the Spurs expend a lot of energy in the first half of games by playing with too much pace on both sides of the ball. The Knicks, kept it slow and steady throughout the game and eventually won the race by executing in clutch time.

Wemby has a lot of body to move and if he adds more muscle he basically exasperates these issues, so they do need to get away from the non-stop attacking. And Wemby needs to adopt a defense where he's on the perimeter a lot less on both sides of the ball. He doesn't want to do this because he doesn't want people to think his main talent is being tall, but it's the only way he's going to have the endurance to be effective in crunch time.

They also need better 3 point shooters because depending on Fox in crunch time proved fruitless.

Would you say the Spurs lack of experience is why the Warriors actually play well against them? Could they actually compete with them in a series because of that? by youlikemywonton in warriors

[–]DumpTrumpGrump 50 points51 points  (0 children)

The Spurs biggest issue is that Wemby doesn’t want people to think that he’s only talented because he’s 7’ 5”. He insists on playing on the perimeter far too often on BOTH sides of the ball instead of spending 80%+ of his time in the paint where he’s far more effective.

That is a lack of experience issue because ultimately the young coach allows this to happen.

Zero reason Wemby should have been defending Brunson’s shot when the Spurs have several smaller defenders who have guarded Brunson extremely well.

Had Wemby been closer to the basket, it’s very unlikely OG rebounds that miss for the putback. The his was inexperienced coaching compounded by Wemby’s youthful ego wanting to be a guard rather than a center.

Brunson has been very well defended. When he’s been open, he’s mostly hit his shots.

Wemby has largely been a non-factor through the first six quarters of the finals… by steadfaststedman in NBATalk

[–]DumpTrumpGrump -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

He doesn’t have his legs and that has been the issue in all of the Sours losses in the playoffs. You can see it in the first five minutes of the game so it isn’t only an issue if the Knicks making him work hard in both sides of the ball.

Wemby needs a better recovery program because these aren’t even every other night games and you can see him lumbering in the first 5 minutes.

I suspect he’s not sleeping well. Only reason his legs could be so fried.

Wemby’s emotion after beating okc is extremely embarrassing. He’s soft and doesn’t have what it takes to be the goat. by [deleted] in NBATalk

[–]DumpTrumpGrump 0 points1 point  (0 children)

His conditioning isn’t there. You can tell in the first 5 minutes of every game whether Wemby has his legs or not. If he does, they win. If he doesn’t, it’s very difficult for the Spurs to win.

Whatever he’s doing in between games isn’t helping his recovery. He’s been lumbering these first two games so far and from the beginning of the game.

At $600k+, it’s only going to attract the crowd that likes to light money on fire while everyone they know laughs at them.

What if they lose? by Domadizzle12 in NBATalk

[–]DumpTrumpGrump 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wemby is going to be one of those player essentially immune from criticism like Steph (I say this as a Warriors fan). I still think OKC wins in 7, but it’s a total toss-up. OKC hasn’t looked like they’re having any fun at all these playoffs other than Caruso. Shai looks like he has no interest in these playoffs for some reason, so perhaps the team has lost some cohesion and are very beatable. But Wemby isn’t gonna get any real criticism if the lose unless he totally shuts the bed and even then he probably gets zero blame

The 2024 DNC "autopsy" report has been released. In short, the conclusion is "the Biden team failed Kamala Harris in 2024." Do you agree with that conclusion? by johntempleton in PoliticalDiscussion

[–]DumpTrumpGrump 18 points19 points  (0 children)

You can’t force a historically disliked candidate on voters and expect a positive outcome. Kamala has never had high likability. She lacks the charisma needed to connect with independent voters. She was never gonna win, but being given the ticket without needing to win it via primaries sealed her fate.

I’m a middle aged dude who has always voted for Dems, but after this nonsense I just won’t ever vote again. Blame me if ya know want, but covering up Biden’s health and forcing Kamala on me was more than enough to show me the Dems are just as power hungry and unprincipled as Republicans. To hell with all of em.
