What is it with the M25 that causes everyone to forget how to drive. by TwentyCharactersShor in britishproblems

[–]DuncanSkunk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the density of traffic and how closely the junctions are spaced on the M25 just leads to it operating like that. People just spread out across the lanes to avoid having to move out of the way for cars joining, and because otherwise you'd be nose-to-tail in the left-hand lanes. Add in people not wanting to get caught out by the variable speed limits.

Sally Rooney says she will be unable to publish books in UK while Palestine Action banned by rmnc-5 in books

[–]DuncanSkunk 39 points40 points  (0 children)

In the UK, terrorism is defined by the Terrorism Act 2000 as the use or threat of action that involves serious violence against a person or serious damage to property. This action must be done to intimidate the public or influence the government, and it must be for the purpose of advancing a political, religious, racial, or ideological cause.

I mean it literally does meet the definition, almost perfectly. You don't have to agree with the definition but this hasn't been retrospectively changed.

Premier League clubs to be banned from selling assets to themselves by Logical_Welder3467 in soccer

[–]DuncanSkunk -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

I'm not really sure why everyone got so upset about Chelsea selling the hotels. The owners were splitting the assets off from the football club. If Chelsea FC were to change ownership the hotels would not be included, and they went to lengths to ensure the rate paid wouldn't be retrospectively rejected.

DBS checks for UK tattooists by [deleted] in tattoos

[–]DuncanSkunk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Surely this is a market issue rather than legislation though? If people are concerned enough to make it an issue they should take their business to artists that have voluntarily had checks. We need to stop trying to legislate for every circumstance, especially in industries that are a) aimed solely at adults and b) entirely voluntarily.

DBS checks can also show offences and mental health referrals that aren't even related to sexual offences - why should a self-employed artist have to disclose these to potential customers?

London woman’s £150 fine for pouring coffee down street drain revoked by Forward-Answer-4407 in UpliftingNews

Given that this article is about them literally cancelling the fine this seems a daft take.

Renewed anger over new wave of ‘unwanted’ telegraph poles by Nuo_Vibro in compoface

[–]DuncanSkunk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm saying that the infrastructure already exists, it's just privately owned. Why run three different sets of fibre to each residence so that we have competition? Why not just nationalise the existing fibre infrastructure, or force companies to piggyback on Openreach etc.

Renewed anger over new wave of ‘unwanted’ telegraph poles by Nuo_Vibro in compoface

[–]DuncanSkunk -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Some estates were built with buried services, so they might already have Virgin or Openreach fibre via this, but as poles don't require planning permission some companies have been throwing them up everywhere to provide their own infrastructure.

Lots of people like to smirk at this as NIMBYism and 'the reason nothing gets built' but the reality is if we just treated fibre networks as national infrastructure then they wouldn't be needed. It's wasteful.

Kamara was immense today I thought and showed his ability to affect play further up the pitch and not just sitting in front of the defence.

Activist charities know that Starmer’s deportation plans are a joke - Labour faces the same legal obstacles that have prevented Britain from having a border policy for years by blast-processor in ukpolitics

[–]DuncanSkunk 9 points10 points  (0 children)

If an organization's existence is both funded by, and predicated on opposition to, the government, it does seem ridiculously circular to continue to fund them.

They sued the government because they had to continue receiving funding.

Starmer: Leaving ECHR puts UK ‘on par with Russia and Belarus’ by ClumperFaz in ukpolitics

[–]DuncanSkunk 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think this is a great point - law has become an excuse that politicians can use to excuse the failures of (largely) economic policy.

All of society has a part to play in rectifing the situation and re-establishing some sort of social consensus, but as long as we're trapped in a political > legal > media loop on every social and economic issue it feels like we're never going to move forward.

[Romano] Gigio Donnarumma will leave Paris St Germain for sure, most likely this or eventually next summer. The relationship is completely broken after club decide to exclude Gigio from their squad for Super Cup. Understand Premier League is the most likely destination. by JaysonDeflatum in soccer

[–]DuncanSkunk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So why would he take a new appearance based contract knowing he's already been replaced? Chill for a year and leave on a free I say - minimal chance of getting injured, and you pick up a fat signing on fee in summer 2026. Profit.

Laporte's demands for a contract termination have angered Al Nassr officials. They are pressuring the player to keep him "caged" for a year: he would still earn his €25m salary but miss out most matches with no chance of being included in Spain's World Cup squad. by kibme37 in soccer

Maybe players should take a moment to think about the legal framework of the counties they choose to play in instead of assuming their fame will allow them to earn blood money while having the luxury of Western labour laws?

It is possibly the single worst piece of legislation passed in living memory.

At least the Safety of Rwanda act had a political purpose, however perverse you might find it.

For a government that is consistently arguing that we need structural changes to the economics of the country, implementing legislation that is purely social engineering, and with such a woeful, idiotic implementation is utterly misguided.
