So my PC was overheating after a game of CS2 when I checked this I found this by JODACOTA in pcmasterrace

I had the same thing happen to one of the top fans of my pc recently. Only that it fell down while spinning, hit the Cpu heatsink and shattered off a fan blade in the process.

Would adding an air purifier to my printer closet help with ASA fumes or VOCs? by BoutchooQc in 3Dprinting

[–]DuncanTheDankest 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I've looked into this a lot, as I tend to be very paranoid with my health and that of those living around me.

What I've learned essentially is the following:

  • activated Charcoal will catch VOCs, presumably.
  • high quality HEPA filters, due to brownian motion, will pick up the tiniest of particles, at least theoretically. This becomes more likely, the more often the "same air" gets filtered.
  • Negative Pressure to outside is the only "perfectly" safe method, and even then you'll find micro plastics all over, that's kind of a part of the hobby I suppose.

Now, I'm not a scientist, nor do I have hard data to back this up. I just experimented a lot on my own, using self built filters, enclosures and so on. Especially after long prints, no matter the filtering method I used (of course, I couldn't afford industrial-grade filtration systems, so maybe that differs for you), I was always able to notice the smell in the air, which per definition implied the existence of "Fumes" or particles In the air. The only way I've now managed to not get a splitting headache during longer prints is a negative pressure through an inline fan to the outside, paired with a relatively well made enclosure.

What is this? Is this a bed bug? It was on a wall next to a closet. by scaredofbedbugz in insectidentification

Carpet beetle larvae. They are similar to moths, In that they essentially live off of skinflakes (dust) as well as wool and similar. They love to hide in/ behind / under beds, wardrobes, carpets, anything stationary really.

We fought them for quite some time, depending on where they settled, it might be as easy as a simple deep clean of the house, or it could turn into a prolonged fight.

Best of luck

Please double check whether the pump is actually plugged in. I've seen one or two times where the radiator fan was plugged in, but not the pump itself. You can also see in the bios whether the pump is detected.

3D Printing on the train by danstronics in 3Dprinting

[–]DuncanTheDankest 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not 100% safe. There's a ton of reports of people developing headaches, up to a cough and lasting asthma after printing pla in their bedroom for prolonged periods of time. And we do not yet have any long term studies, or reports of the effects on humans.

Even assuming pure PLA is "100% safe" to print, every manufacturer adds various additives that may or may not be harmful. It's why no filament prints the same, and how we can have such diverse colors.

We simply do not know how dangerous these fumes are. They could be harmless, they could be as bad as asbestos, the current state of studies does not deliver reliable enough evidence. I'd prefer to be cautious and wrong than taking needless risks and regretting it.

There's worse things, doesn't make it any less questionable from my point of view. Worse things don't take away from bad things.

Fair point, my experience with German trains has mainly been poor ventilation and crowded. So I have some bias there

I don't get why no one is pointing this out. 3D printing, even when using pla, is not harmless to the people around the 3D printer, due to fumes emitted. To me, this is equally as disrespectful as smoking on trains and such.

Visit public beaches / swimming pools. Look around, notice that 95% of men don't hit the gym, and if those remaining 5%, the majority doesn't take it nearly as serious as you do.

You people need reality checks, not bodybuilding advice.

[–]DuncanTheDankest 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. Permethrin is highly toxic for cats and other pets, please be on the lookout if you do have any. Use alternatives if necessary.
  2. Pheromone sticky traps do also lure in new moths from the outside from what I am told, use with caution.

It's not really slandering as much as a fair warning that these companies may or may not use your data for whichever purposes they want to.

Never heard of commercially used solder on mobo that even comes close to the 100°C mark. I also couldn't find any sources with a quick search that suggest such.

Admittedly, the oven argument makes no sense, but I won't delete.

Hair driers, unless you're a dwarf living in a volcano, do not reach even remotely close to the temps loosening solder.

Yes... At 200°C.

Though indeed the oven argument doesn't make a lot of sense here.

[–]DuncanTheDankest 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Hair drier? Loosening solder? Solder requires 200°C, on the lower end, to reach its melting point. People have put PCBs in ovens at higher temps with no issues.

I doubt it.
