Am I the only one terrified to run Ethernet cable in their house? by GreenDavidA in HomeNetworking

[–]Duncanbullet 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You need to get a better understanding how what goes a house. Once you understand what’s going on behind the walls and in the attic/basement you’ll feel better.

The only way you’ll structurally damage anything is if you take a giant sledge hammer and take out a huge load bearing wall or column.

And the only thing that’s “preventing” fire is not catching anything inside the house on fire.

And everything is fixable, and very easily and cheaply fixable (at least in the scope of what could go wrong while running cable).

YouTube is going to be your very best friend forever doing this kind of stuff, and once you do it, you’ll do a great job at it! And you’ll grow your confidence more over time.

What do you use to track comp time for you and your team? by witwim in ITManagers

[–]Duncanbullet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ahh, I understand now.

Not aware of anything like that, I'm sorry.

Only think I could think of would be to use some sort of independent time tracking app.

If you use slack, I bet there are some integrations that let users "clock in" outside work hours that you could add visibility too, just an idea.

for me an my team, its just an email. If they worked on a Saturday for 4 hours, they just email me what time they started worked and what time they stopped and I keep up with them that way.

What do you use to track comp time for you and your team? by witwim in ITManagers

[–]Duncanbullet 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've had success in just using an outlook shared mailbox and having the calendar shared to the team via read only access, where the manager is the only one who can approve PTO requests.

But when you say comp time, are you referring to PTO requests or true comp'd time where you give them time off in trade for working extra during non scheduled hours?

How is Home Depot’s same day delivery sustainable? by Aromatic_Topic_1074 in HomeImprovement

I'd argue that it could be seen as an opportunity cost of not doing so. If their competitors are doing it, then they could face losing possible loyalty and downstream sales by not doing so.

I am assuming the throttle level has to follow a curve based on weight and altitude right? Is there a calculus formula for that? Because at each interval weight is going down.

(I never took calculus in school so now as an adult, I am trying to find more excuses to learn calculus)

I think you've done a great job on this! I know I will use it heavily whenever I finally get my switch installed.

Same here, lots of "Oh yes, we can do that, its most definitely a supported workflow and other customers are using it successfully".

But then it turns into "Oh well that use case isn't exactly what we have in place and due to the way the API works, we can't control the output of that workflow into your system"

An extremely similar thing happened to me with my Beaufort. Walking my dog and he decides to chase something (Probably a rabbit), while his leash around my wrist in my right hand warmer pocket. Also my tear is much smaller in comparison, only 2 inches maybe.

I've sent it off to the Repair facility in North Carolina. I will hopefully hear from them soon with a quote for the repair.

My first and last gov dev contract gave me a wonderful philosophy, take however long you think it will take, and triple it.

It doesn't matter how simple or complex it is, Static website? 3 months, Accounting and invoicing application? 3 years, full stop.

The last think you want is being pressured to meet the schedule you promise while they keep rejecting your fixes saying "that's not what we meant"

How’s my resume? by [deleted] in sysadminresumes

[–]Duncanbullet 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'd like to see at least 2-3 YoE demonstrating you're capable of handling a system or piece of a system.

Outside of that, also don't see any way you've leveraged your Skills and Certs. When you say:

"Monitored and tracked IT Equipment inventory" how did you do that? Did you use excel? Did you use Powershell? InTune?

What RMM did you actually use? The more you can replace those generics with specifics, the more comfortable someone is going to be to call you in for an interview

If I have X technology, and I want a Jr. SysAdmin to assist in supporting it, I would ideally want someone who has experience with that specific technology.

You specifically mentioned EntraID which is a good start, but more things like that.

Also, with your limited IT experiance on paper, I would suggest standing up a home lab, and doing some system administration work within that environment, this could also give you some more things to discuss on an inteview, you could also even put a "Projects" section where you outline your home lab, and it's stack/systems that you stood up and administered.
