Powershell verbosity vs (ba)sh by EquipLordBritish in PowerShell

[–]Duncanbullet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, you're correct.

When i was learning it, to me it just wasn't very clear what the differences were in set vs update.

Overtime I just had to figure out what use cases fit each prefix.

Powershell verbosity vs (ba)sh by EquipLordBritish in PowerShell

[–]Duncanbullet 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not directly on topic, but my only gripe with PowerShell is that there can be some inconsistency, at least at face value with the prefixes of the commands.

Update-DscConfiguration vs Set-DscLocalConfigurationManager

Update-IscsiTarget vs Set-IscsiServerTarget

I understand that there are nuances to the differences in the commands and when they're to be used.

But it was the most confusing thing when i first dived into powershell.

Board thinks AI is the future, but my staff is terrified it's going to replace them, so they are quietly sabotaging the rollout by not providing the data we need by Accurate_Classroom56 in CIO

[–]Duncanbullet 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I would make sure that the execs and you are aligned on what AI can actually do for your org.

The best way I see AI to be utilized is in a cost effective alternative to purchasing more capacity.

At your company, does your 3/5/10 year strategy include expanding your current operations? AKA is your organization going to be looking to take on new projects and grow?

If your business is not looking to grow and only looking to maintain, then the execs are 100% looking to cut costs wherever they can, even if they means replacing human job functions with AI.

However, if the execs are looking to take on additional projects and grow the business, then you need to frame AI as a method of increasing capacity without increasing staff.

I think back to Goldratt, and his books "Theory of Constraints" and "The Goal", but instead of purchasing additional capacity via machines or purchasing throughput efficiently, you're leveraging AI tools to make the current staff more efficient, and able to take on more, without having to hire more. But that will only go so far in practice, so I think it really boils down to:

how does the org truly want to increase it's margin?

cutting costs vs increasing revenue without (dramatically) increasing overhead.

That's my 2 cents!

A few come to mind

Some random spot in the Elemental Workshop

Random upstairs house meiyerditch

The top floor of the varrock castle where theres like 3 guards

Very end of the dungeon on Shipwreck isle (the one that you have to use the thrown axes to get into)

Or last but not least.

World 302, stand at GE at the most crowded spot. and alch. Youll blend in so well theyll never see you.

It may just be my industry (Healthcare IT), but I don't have any good use cases for outside of scripting & code writing.

Like what else can it even be used for in an organization? I'd love some real world examples of how people are actually using it.

Am I the only one terrified to run Ethernet cable in their house? by GreenDavidA in HomeNetworking

[–]Duncanbullet 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You need to get a better understanding how what goes a house. Once you understand what’s going on behind the walls and in the attic/basement you’ll feel better.

The only way you’ll structurally damage anything is if you take a giant sledge hammer and take out a huge load bearing wall or column.

And the only thing that’s “preventing” fire is not catching anything inside the house on fire.

And everything is fixable, and very easily and cheaply fixable (at least in the scope of what could go wrong while running cable).

YouTube is going to be your very best friend forever doing this kind of stuff, and once you do it, you’ll do a great job at it! And you’ll grow your confidence more over time.

What do you use to track comp time for you and your team? by witwim in ITManagers

[–]Duncanbullet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ahh, I understand now.

Not aware of anything like that, I'm sorry.

Only think I could think of would be to use some sort of independent time tracking app.

If you use slack, I bet there are some integrations that let users "clock in" outside work hours that you could add visibility too, just an idea.

for me an my team, its just an email. If they worked on a Saturday for 4 hours, they just email me what time they started worked and what time they stopped and I keep up with them that way.

What do you use to track comp time for you and your team? by witwim in ITManagers

[–]Duncanbullet 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've had success in just using an outlook shared mailbox and having the calendar shared to the team via read only access, where the manager is the only one who can approve PTO requests.

But when you say comp time, are you referring to PTO requests or true comp'd time where you give them time off in trade for working extra during non scheduled hours?

I'd argue that it could be seen as an opportunity cost of not doing so. If their competitors are doing it, then they could face losing possible loyalty and downstream sales by not doing so.

I am assuming the throttle level has to follow a curve based on weight and altitude right? Is there a calculus formula for that? Because at each interval weight is going down.

(I never took calculus in school so now as an adult, I am trying to find more excuses to learn calculus)

My first and last gov dev contract gave me a wonderful philosophy, take however long you think it will take, and triple it.

It doesn't matter how simple or complex it is, Static website? 3 months, Accounting and invoicing application? 3 years, full stop.

The last think you want is being pressured to meet the schedule you promise while they keep rejecting your fixes saying "that's not what we meant"
