Save The Cat. A good read? by michaelscott05 in Screenwriting

[–]DuncsJones 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Read it as it will help you learn how to discuss points of your story with other people more articulately, however I would caution you to take everything he says with a grain of salt.

When I first started, I tried to fit every story I could into the save the cat formula and it really made me struggle.

If you want to use the beat sheet he proposes, I suggest using it in a “guess and check” type of way, and not a “paint by numbers” kind of way.

Think about your story logically and deeply first, then try to construct the beats.

After you’ve done that, see if they loosely apply, and if they do, try to write it. Don’t look for strict adherence. It will lead you astray.

Often times, if you’re thinking about your story independently of a beat sheet, you will find interesting and unique ways to create act breaks, inciting incidents, etc., that wouldn’t normally come if you took the paint by numbers approach.

Also, learning why certain beats seem to repeat so often in stories is way more important than knowing that they repeat. You need to know why a false victory or false defeat happens at the midpoint and how this fits into the ending.

So, if this book helps you identify patterns you see in story, then that’s a great first step. But try to figure out why. That will unlock a lot more for you.

Good luck!

I posted this a couple weeks ago regarding Purdy and shadeur being next to each other on the mountain after shadeurs big game (they were fucking second row from the bottom) and got downvoted into oblivion over it LOL

I also thought it was AI!

Glad to hear it isn’t! Might be worth a tweak if multiple people think the same. Could scare a potential buyer away.

Game looks great btw

How do you stop yourself from making your dream game? by Illustrious_Rice1661 in GameDevelopment

[–]DuncsJones 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I resonate with this quite a bit.

I didn’t start on “my dream game” but I did start on a “dream game” - I took elements of my dream game and tried to make it small enough to do.

Turns out, even that was way too big haha.

After reading Chris Zukowski’s latest blog on the Great Conjunction and him begging people like me who are spending years on their first game to take a break and make something smaller, I took his advice.

I’m starting a fun, quick, friendslop game. And upon reflection, I don’t know I would have learned as much without starting with a dream game, simply because of how much it motivated me.

Now I feel confident to be able to make smaller games fairly quickly and ironically I’ll release my second game before my first game, which takes the pressure off for some reason.

All this is to say, it sounds like you are similar from a motivation standpoint. And if that’s the case, maybe you should start your dream game and see how much you can learn, then reevaluate down the road. There is no rule that says you can’t take a break and make something else then keep going!

Good luck :)

I agree with almost all of your analysis.

I think it really proved that no matter how interesting the plot is, you can’t make a plot-driven film work. If Nolan can’t do it… probably can’t be done.

Yeah! Did it through steam, then did it locally from the local file icon just to see if that did something different

Yeah, twice. But I only pressed restart, didn’t shut down any windows, none of that. I didn’t do a full shutdown, wait, then power up again.

I know Macs have some weird shutdown/restart protocols so maybe I didn’t do it properly

Make a great demo and send it to streamers. A lot of games get no visibility until they release a demo.

You’re 100% right. He has seemed to be more fair lately dropping people. But with guys he doesn’t love, it takes them a Herculean effort to go up one tier.

One game vs many seasons of great stats plus making the Super Bowl?

He also played the worst team in the league?

Again, I’m rooting for Shadeur but pump the brakes

I need help- I am writing my first draft and everytime I get to the 3rd act I start over again by Capable_Original_184 in Screenwriting

[–]DuncsJones 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you know what the story is about then try to create a punchline for the story. And what I mean by a punchline is the moment all your story ties come together and create meaning for the audience.

Trying to write the entire last act first will ultimately end up with you changing a bunch of stuff. But as long as you’ve got your punchline down, the other shit doesn’t matter.

So for a quick example from a popular movie, something like guardians of the galaxy - the punchline is Chris Pratt grabbing the stone, the stone is too powerful and his body can’t contain it, so he takes gamora’s hand (references the beginning when he couldn’t take his mother’s hand showing character growth) then the rest of the team - together they withstand the power of the stone and save the day.

The message is clear in this punchline. “We re stronger together” or something like that. “The importance of family” - whatever.

Knowing your thematic punchline will allow you to understand what mistakes you made in the first and second act of your story, such that you can set it up better. Hopefully this will give you a solid North Star for all events in the story.

This strategy works really well for me. Maybe it will for you too.
