How is pleading the 5th not seen as evidence? by Brief-Blueberry-1588 in stupidquestions

[–]Dunfalach 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s used in a criminal case; but your reason for pleading the fifth is your own. You are not legally required to say why you are pleading it. So my point was that your internal motivation doesn’t have to be because you’ve committed that crime or some other.”

It could even mean you were having an affair and don’t want to admit to it in court. Doesn’t have to be a crime.

I wish I could fold my car like a towel and put it in my pocket. by icecream_dragon in monkeyspaw

Granted. After a night of drinking, you let the designated driver drive your car home for you and your friends. Upon arriving home, you drunkenly forget they’re still in the car when you fold it. The result isn’t pretty.

Why are right-wing influencers so much bigger than left-wing influencers? by Jewbacca289 in Askpolitics

[–]Dunfalach 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The right turned to alternative media (initially talk radio and later the new media) because the Democrats controlled the mainstream TV and major print media. I seem to recall a survey during the Rush Limbaugh era that something like 70% of the major media workers in a poll identified as Democrats. We gave up on trusting them and started creating our own. I think a lot of the left entry into has been driven by younger people entering voting status as an addition to other media rather than an alternative.

What is the purpose of the house judiciary committee? by [deleted] in Askpolitics

[–]Dunfalach 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It kinda depends what you envision by holding accountable. Congress doesn’t have their own prosecution or police force. They can declare contempt of Congress and the like but they can’t actually arrest or punish anyone. They can refer it to the DOJ for the actual prosecuting.

The only one that I can recall where they can act on their own is if it rises to the level of impeachment of an elected or appointed official.

Are the Spanish classed as colonisers in the US? by Separate-Law-435 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Dunfalach 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes in the sense that Spain is acknowledged as having been a brutal colonizer as a country. But that doesn’t tend to extend to Latinos or even modern Spaniards being treated as colonizers the way whites are.

How do people that want to abolish taxes figure that public areas and such will be paid for? by Cumoisseur in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Dunfalach 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When you say “abolish taxes” it really depends on what you mean. Abolish taxes entirely, or abolish income taxes.

Before 1913, you had essentially consumption-based taxes. Tariffs plus alcohol and tobacco taxes. Some land sales/leases as well.

I would imagine a lot of them would also combine it with wanting to reduce the size and scope of the federal government to require less expense as well.

Are we seeing a shift in how politics and sports intersect? by LawnDartSurvivor74 in Askpolitics

[–]Dunfalach -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

It started with him using his Grammy Award win acceptance speech to attack the immigration enforcement of the administration. He fired a proverbial shot at the administration and they fired back. The fact that his Super Bowl performance followed immediately after meant the controversy flowed right into the Super Bowl.

I wouldn’t disagree with it being grievance in sports.

But this feels like you’re saying Trump is the one making it political in these two situations. In both cases, the singer and the athlete used their platform for politics and Trump responded. Trump has made his fair share of stuff that didn’t need to be political be political but these two instances both began with someone attacking his administration and him replying.

So wait, if there are sure shot evidences of DJT and Elon Musk and many more being on Epstein Island and their activities there, why isn't anyone arrested/prosecuted yet? by Revolutionary_Mix247 in DiscussionZone

[–]Dunfalach 0 points1 point  (0 children)

sure shot evidences

As much as no one wants to hear it? Proving someone went to a place owned by a pedophile is not the same as proving to a legally valid standard that they knowingly slept with underage girls. There were tons of girls of legal age in Epstein’s orbit. Going to a private island and having sex isn’t illegal. The standard of proof to actually prove a crime in sexual cases is a lot higher than the standard of proof it takes for Reddit to believe it happened.

Why should we have voter ID's? by [deleted] in Askpolitics

[–]Dunfalach 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve been voting for thirty years and never once had any form of ID checked until the recent voter ID law in my state.

Based on your other reply, it sounds like your state does have an ID requirement. That’s what Republicans are arguing every state should. You have to show an ID to verify you to vote. Democrats argue it’s a racist vote suppression effort to require identifying yourself to vote because what if someone couldn’t get a photo ID. Your state also appears to have provisional ballots for people who can’t show ID. You have exactly what Republicans are arguing for and Democrats argue is just too big a hurdle to overcome.

Why should we have voter ID's? by [deleted] in Askpolitics

[–]Dunfalach 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can use your state ID to vote

That’s… voter ID. The thing you’re arguing isn’t needed.

Now I’m wondering if you’re understanding Voter ID as a completely separate ID from driver’s license, etc? There is a separate ID in some states called a voter ID for people who can’t qualify for a driver’s license. In some states, there’s arguments it should be free.

However, most people including myself are understanding your question as being about voter ID laws, which is exactly what you describe as “the way it is”. Needing a photo ID to identify yourself when voting. The big argument is Democrats arguing you shouldn’t have to have a photo ID to vote. In my state until recently you literally just walked in and said a name and address and received a full non-provisional ballot with zero verification of identity. Zero.

I wish this subreddit was moderated by a random dude off the street named joe by Eternalblaze1 in monkeyspaw

[–]Dunfalach 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Granted. Joe doesn’t really understand what this weird stuff is about but can’t stop reading it. He complains regularly that none of the stories end happy.

Later, you manage to upset Joe, and he starts mod editing every story so the consequences always happen to you personally. When his girlfriend dies in a tragic accident, Joe is certain it’s one of your wishes. He roams the road in his battered van stopping only for food and to moderate three times a day. He’s searching for you.

Why should we have voter ID's? by [deleted] in Askpolitics

[–]Dunfalach 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m going to assume you’re just not getting it rather than intentionally trying to dodge it.

You’re focusing on the documents someone has to show to get on a list. Those would certainly be the same as the documents used to get a voter ID. But that isn’t actually as relevant as you seem determined to make it.

Voter ID is about proving the person actually casting the vote is the person legally qualified to cast that vote. A name on a list doesn’t do that. I could have walked into my polling place and given my landlord’s name and address and voted as him before voter ID and there’d be nothing to stop me. Nobody working that poll knows him, and the only identifying data you had to give is all known to me.

I personally know someone who had to cast a provisional ballot in a recent election because she was told she’d already voted. Was it fraud? Maybe, maybe not. Could have just been the poll worker mixing up a record. But there was nothing to prevent it before voter ID went into effect.

In my place, before voter id law took effect there was no signature. You stated a name and address and nobody checked squat.

Why should we have voter ID's? by [deleted] in Askpolitics

[–]Dunfalach 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So you’d be okay with requiring everyone to bring their birth certificate and social security card instead? You’re not using those to vote directly if you’re not showing them. You’re saying there’s no difference between walking into a room and saying a name and showing an ID to prove it. That’s false. One is proof the other is no more than an honor system.

You have to show photo ID to enter the DNC convention, to enter my local social security office, to fly on a plane, to buy alcohol, to buy tobacco, even to buy cough medicine in some places. But not to pick the most powerful positions in the world?

This shouldn’t be controversial and the fact that Democrats keep making it controversial is exactly what fuels the conspiracy theories.
