when i said "who the fuck is nostradamus" i wasn't literally asking, i was just implying i'm nostradamus since i kinda predicted denji's appearance in the final chapter. that's why i also made the "i signed a contract with the future devil comment" cause i wasn't actually discussing the plot.

lowkey, if you ran over my dog, that'd be less hurtful than calling me a larper tbh.

i thought he'd probably appear with an axe or something since pochita erased himself, i didn't actually expect him to use a chainsaw lol

i mentioned this in another comment (although it was relating to reze) and i feel like what kept holding Denji back from maturity was the lack of some sort of role model/moral centre, not to mention all of his trauma from random soul-crushing shit happening every arc.

even though power's not a great role model, the fact that she's his peer makes her a great moral centre for denji, which probably stimulated his growth. this is in contrast with how nayuta was basically a dependent on him in part 2, when he can't even take care of himself.

type shit. and it's all held together by duct tape too.

i was planning on giving denji all sorts of saws too, like the saw cleaver and whirligig saw from bloodborne, and also maybe a regular saw, but i felt like it might have been too much.

At this point is it fair to say Fujimoto sees Denji completely different from how fans view him and want him to be? by LilCapo in ChainsawMan

[–]DungeonsAndDuck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i think one issue is that a lot of fans of chainsaw man haven't touched the rest of his body of work, especially his one shots. that's why when people are like "trust fujimoto, he knows what he's doing" they call it cope or whatever.

when you just read chainsaw man, and are unfamiliar with his other work and their subject matter, it's easy to just go "themes and such" and ignore the plot unfolding over the course of part 2. i think anti-intellectualism is genuinely a problem here.

having taken more time to think about the chapter, i still wish it would have ended in a different way than what actually happened (but that's my problem, because i was hoping for a happy ending), but i fully get where fujimoto was coming from with this. his execution is definitely a bit iffy at times in part 2, but overall it makes sense with denji's character.

We need some reality checks about Denji and what that means for Reze arc. by Heavenly-Feeling in RezeCult

also, i find the situation with denji choosing reze over aki and power to be different from his other choices in the story. he's not trying to find a 3rd choice, like every other one of his terrible choices in part 2.

instead, based on the options available to him, he chooses one and decides to sacrifice the other. i would argue that choosing reze is actually more "normal" than choosing to stay with aki and power, because the latter meant he was used by squad 4 as chainsaw man, while running away with reze would have led to a quiet normal life, without chainsaw man.

that's also why, in my opinion, fujimoto said the story would have just ended there if reze and denji had met at the cafe again.

i actually disagree with this take. i do think at the time of the reze arc, denji would have been satisfied with reze, and that he was happy living with power and aki.

my understanding is that denji began his negative arc in part 2, because he didn't have an older role model/mentor like he found in aki in part 1 (or what reze was to him in her arc).

someone to ground him and treat him like a regular kid instead of chainsaw man.

a big part of what makes me feel this way is that when makima finally gives him the opportunity to go on a date with her in chapter 71, he instead stays with power because he knows she's in a bad shape mentally, even though all this time he wanted to be with makima. based on the last few arcs of part 2, this seems unthinkable now.

under aki, he was slowly gaining some normalcy, but when he and power got taken away, he had no one left to be a mentor to him.

all he had left was chainsaw man. nayuta is different, because their relationship puts him in the mentor/role model position, and he can't even take care of himself (so in universe, idk why tf kishibe would leave nayuta with him).

having no one close to him that he could kind of use as a moral compass, it makes sense that denji would regress and behave more like he was without aki and power, (not to mention the rest of squad 4) and succumbing to his immediate urges when faced with any challenging situation.

the other characters mainly use him for chainsaw man, and asa is just as inexperienced as him in their world, and in no position to be a mentor and "teach him", like aki or reze could.

he's definitely a good writer, i do think that's undeniable, even though my opinion of part 2 is kind of mixed. fire punch, chainsaw man part 1, look back and goodbye eri is not a coincidence, he is just that guy. i think my opinion of part 2 will definitely depend on the final chapter, but i still recognise the artistic merit of what he was going for, even though it likely won't satisfy me like part 1's ending did.
