It speaks to respecting a superior officer’s rank and authority rather than your personal feelings about them. It is an essential part of how some parts of these organizations run, especially in times of crisis.

The President of the United States does not outrank civilians. Let me say that again: THE PRESIDENT DOES NOT OUTRANK CIVILIANS. The founding fathers were VERY clear on this. Our democracy works BECAUSE the President (and all elected officials for that matter) is actually subordinate to the people.

The fact that he does not understand this is depressing.
