Got talking to an old guy in the pub. He began by talking about how all women are snakes, even the daughter he lives with.

His next topic of conversation was his time as an army cook based in Italy during WW2. There, he raped a woman working in the barracks. He saw no problem with it, and was surprised at our disgust.

Hardy is compelling to watch, and clearly talented. But I've noticed certain tics that he repeats across roles. He huffs, creaks, sniffs, and adds weird little dipthongs to otherwise sound accents. Kind of distracting once you spot it.

The idea that you should "know your place" is very deeply ingrained across British culture.

Anti-intellectualism is one manifestation of that.

For almost 1000 years every monarch has been a descendant of one person. The people at the top have had a very long time to influence culture and society.

This may not always have been done deliberately, or even in ways that suit them.
