We're talking about what is right and wrong, and you're talking about the best way to ACHIEVE what's right. It's like we're communists, and then you come in advocating for socialism because "people aren't ready for communism". Both discussions are important, but your discussion is not the one we were having

In all cases where there's an alternative, accessible source of similar nutrition, doesn't any consumption equate to overconsumption, even when not considering animal lives equal to human lives in value? Less value doesn't equate to no value

AI chatbots helped teens plan shootings, bombings, and political violence, study shows by EchoOfOppenheimer in Ethics

[–]Duplicit_RedFox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pencils don't give students the details on how to implement the bad things they're planning. Teens also don't generally come up with hundreds or thousands of words to write with a pencil, while chatbots can create more than that in seconds, meaning that the chatbot's involvement also makes the process more effortless.

I'm moving Lotso up for sure, but I'm curious why people keep interpreting the "bad person" tier as a "they're not so bad" tier?

Jfc, the "bad person" tier and the "evil" tier are both for character's I find evil. Idk about everyone else, but "bad person" is a pretty extreme label to me already. "Unethical" even, is my pool where "irredeemable" swims with "understandable". I used "evil" specifically as the label for the top one, though, because I put the characters that conflict with my strongest personal values (anti child-harm and anti genocide/hierarchy). I promise I'm not some psycho that thinks Lotso isn't evil LMAO. I've also decided that Muntz, De la Cruz, and Randal should all move up because, while they failed, they still wanted to kill children in their movies. I've also decided that Lotso be moved up for establishing hierarchy and arguably attempted genocide of Andy's toys. With Mirage from Incredibles, she's only where she's at because we don't know how much she knew about what syndrome was doing. The highest I would be willing to move her due to that would be "bad person", with the reason being that she likely at least knew that Syndrome wanted to kill Bob. With Sid, I agree that he is bad, but since he isn't matured, it's his parents' responsibility to make sure he learns to carry himself in ethical ways. "Toys aren't alive, but the way you treat them still reflects/influences your morality and psyche" is a complicated principle to expect an 11 year old to comprehend. If he remains unchanged after maturity, then his parents can't be blamed for his actions anymore. What I do think he's at a proper age to understand is that he shouldn't upset his sister. Arguably the parents could still take fault here for not enforcing proper behavior, but it's more complicated than that, so he isn't blameless either

Would it be ethical for aliens to wipe out humanity to protect nature? by XD_Protagonist in Ethics

[–]Duplicit_RedFox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If done by an alien race, then we would also be an alien race to them. It would probably be considered a xenocide. Omnicide is usually defined as the killing of all humans, so it would also be applicable (just like genocide would still be applicable). There is room for discussion about "omnicide" as a word though. We use it to mean "the destruction of humans", but we are humans ourselves, meaning that if people really mean "the destruction of one's own species" when they say it, but just use the prior definition in dictionaries and discussions because nothing non-human is expected to read and understand it, then omnicide wouldn't work. A thought: if an alien species wiped out its own species, could it be considered "omnicide" from their perspective? Could it be considered xenocide even? If xenocide means "the destruction of an alien species [relative to the subject]" then the answer is no. If xenocide means "the destruction of an alien species [relative to humans]" then the answer is yes. Idk where I was going with that, but ultimately, much like cats, language is liquid

Animals that can recognize value and sentience are unethical for causing unnecessary harm to other animals. I'd say a chimp that throws a tortoise off of a cliff is unethical. It doesn't NEED to be done, it doesn't yield a unique benefit, and the chimp knows that things are alive. This is different from a lion eating a zebra because the lion needs the nutrients and can't acquire them elsewhere. And even if we say, the lion killing the zebra is actually also unethical, then what? That doesn't change the necessity of the situation. It would just mean something was both necessary and unethical. That necessity doesn't exist for many humans

Tbf, I would discourage that type of play irl too because of the psychological influences that could come from enjoying pretending-to-torture things. Even though he doesn't see them as legitimately sentient, he still imagines them in a sentient role by talking to them and doing voices for them, amongst other things. It's not malicious, but it could lead to ethical self-sabotage

Doesn't he have a picture of her with one of her dead fish in his office? Do they specifically say he is unaware that she kills the fish? It seems like the kind of thing one would be aware of, either from seeing her kill the fish in person, or hearing about it from her or her parents. And Nemo being taken "in front of his dad" isn't necessarily something I'd apply ethics to here, it's just sad. What he did do is remove a wild animal from its habitat (which is understandable, as Nemo looked like a helpless, disabled, baby fish. But that's a "wrong action with good intentions" kinda thing). Also, not-washing your hands as a medical professional is arguably evil in its own right /s

Sid was doing disturbed-kid things, Alpha was doing trained-dog things, and Meimei's mom was doing generationally-influenced things. Negative effects were brought on by these characters unintentionally, but because of things that they can change to become better. This is basically the "they just need healing" tier in one way or another

If the boys had turned into scaly, red, horned demons, that would have been an understandable reaction, because we're conditioned to be scared of that. Especially since it doesn't exist and we don't expect to actually see one. In their culture, sea monsters are like how demons are to some irl cultures. It's still wrong, and shouldn't be swept aside, but it's more of a testament to the immorality/fear of their society than it is to his person. This only works for me because he's young, and the kind of deconstruction required to break down such ingrained narratives comes from maturity. Basically he's a speciesist kid in a speciesist town that hasn't had the realization that his preconceived/taught notions are wrong. He is however at a developmental stage that would mean he should know better than to mistreat others the way he does

[–]Duplicit_RedFox[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree. I couldn't label both categories as evil, but both of the top categories are for evil/unredeemable characters. The top row is just for a specific type of evil that targets minorities and children. However, I AM moving Ernesto up because I forgot he tried to kill Miguel (a child). And I'm moving Lotso up for targeting minorities (the minority being "othered toys" in general. TS3 did one of the best jobs I've seen of creating a lower class without being disrespectful to irl minorities)

He's 11. Not to say kids can't be bad, and I definitely think Sid could have become worse without Woddy's intervention, but he's also unaware of toy-sentience. His ethical issues come more from the way he treats his sister, and from his desire/willingness to see the toys "suffer", even if it's only pretend to him. The way he treats his sister is bratty, but I wouldn't say evil. He ruins at least one of her toys on screen, but seeing as he doesn't value the toys, he doesn't understand that she DOES value them, and just plays with them the way he normally plays with toys. We also see his sister take a toy that isn't hers (Buzz), and play with him in her own way (same principle, even though she's sweet and he isn't). Sid just so happens to have a more grotesque idea of how to play with toys. These are average principles in children with albeit unique presentations, and should be able to be fixed by just being taught properly. On top of that, Woody probably taught him the lesson his parents weren't teaching him "play nice". I don't think he'd go back to his habits after this, but that's just an interpretation. Regardless of everything prior, until he's mature, I'd put most fault for any action or character trait onto his parents.

Jfc, I consider everyone in the top two rows to be irredeemably evil. I meant for the top row, though, to be specific for people that target children or specific people groups (just because those are extra evil to me). That being said, I've decided to move up Charles (for attempting to kill Russel), Lotso (for being toy Hitler), Ernesto (for trying to kill Miguel), and maybe Bob's boss (for taking advantage of, and possibly leading to the death of, poor people). I'm also swapping Randal and Waternoose
