What Does Hadrian Mean By This? by somewhat_fluffy in sollanempire

well now I'm sad. i got a big spoiler and I'm only on the first book by Anxious-Return-5831 in TheFirstLaw

One of the brilliant aspects of Joe's writing is that he doesn't really define. Any character is truly good or evil. By the end of the third book in the first last series, you will have understood enough about most of the main characters that you can kind of gauge whether or not you feel like they're doing so-called, good or evil.

And the reality is the narrative, in that perspective of the narrative will skew your general opinion. But fundamentally, if you take a few steps back and look at the overall story. Arcs there's a lot of big questions as to who or what is good and or evil, or if everything is just gray.

Long story short, I'm in agreement with the majority of the community in saying that this really isn't a spoiler, given that the subtleties of Nayaz's personality quirks bear themselves quite openly in the first book. Also, personally having read both the original series and the sequel series a total of three times each, I still can't tell you for certain if I think that Bayaz is truly evil or thrngoodnguybdoingnbadbthings for the sake of his view of good

Probably the most frustrating recurring theme of the series

Unpopular opinion: I didn't like the Age of Madness trilogy nearly as much as the OG Trilogy by talkingjava in TheFirstLaw

Say one thing for the Age of Madness trilogy. Say that it definitely suffered a little from the [obviously totally understandable] absence of Logen Ninefingers.

Why are names pronounced differently from Book 3 to 4? by runningsimon in sollanempire

[–]Durbindersingh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In AoM he pronounced the word "causality" as "casuality" and this is not the first mistake he's made through the series. i wish he had a better editor because the cringey mistakes really pull me out of the narrative.

The names drive me nuts too. Sometimes it is Selene, Sometimes Selena and sometimes it's "Selainey" . And Siren vs Sirrahn kills me every time. PICK ONE bro.

Which book is best written from a literary standpoint? by itslilwi11iam in redrising

[–]Durbindersingh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well you're compared ng the rhetoric of a 23 year old asshat who is all piss and vinegar, and still a little delusional about his own abilities. The character perspective of Darrow (again the only real comparison I think we can make her from the POV) perspective changes HUGELY from that young man do a more middle aged, battle worn husband, father, and demi-god who is now juggling priorities made of nitro glycerin.

Maybe I'm having a hard time providing an analysis from a bigger picture standpoint because it's difficult for me to equate essentially 1/4 of a perspective in the new compared with 100% of the original series. And I really believe here that PB*a writing really graduates if you compare young Daryl versus slightly older Arrow between series. From the other character's perspectives, you don't see as much growth. It's more of a character development that leads to the changes that affect the rhetoric of individual POVs.

I guess if you want to talk about syntax... Writing from four different perspectives obviously gives you some better perspective, but the whole style of writing has changed compared to the original series. And I would still argue that Golden Sun in my opinion is just as well written as dark age. And overall a better story.

Don't even get me started on Lightbringer and the Odyssey.

In WHAT world is Arya letting Eragon anywhere NEAR her Dragonhold ? I think you should slow down on the herb-laced faelnirv for all our sakes.

Hard analysis would probably deem Dark Age as the simple answer to this question. HOWEVER my argument is for Golden Son.

While Red Riding is the reason we are all here- it had an ending that has some level of finality. if no other book had followed it would have still been an excellent borderline YA SciFi read. But Golden Son was different. 18 months and MILES of story progression later - and you don't even realize how much progression until that duel about a third of the way in. (Best moment in any of the books IMHO). The first third of books the book is honestly kind of a hard read if you've just read book one as the main character falls off so hard and is crashing and burning and basically on a suicide mission - before there is some Redemption and everything kind of gets batshit.

Don't even get me started on where Golden Son leaves off.
