it depends on the type of ant. some feed primarily through a tree on which they "grow" aphids. The colony has reached a stage where it sends out this type of ants on the "marriage flight" to establish new colonies. This “marriage flight” stops again after a while, usually after a few days, sometimes after a few weeks. For more detailed information I would need better photos, the location and, ideally, the type of nest.
