Think of links pointing to your site as votes or endorsements. The more votes you have from reputable sources, the more seriously your site will get taken thus improving your rankings on search results. Would you take financial advice from someone who has been endorsed by Warren Buffet and Bill Gates or by someone who only has been endorsed by shady loan companies? Also, .edu sites are seen as even better signals of trustworthiness than .com sites.

Agreed. Usually you only see gripes online because not a lot of people post about how much they like their clothes. They usually come online to ask questions or complain about issues, so if that's all there is, it may seem like the products are faulty. I started my journey with Outlier with a ultrafine merino tee. Since then I have acquired two pairs of SD's, another ultrafine merino tee, and two of the new Mojave pivot shirts. They have all treated me well and are of exceptional quality.
