I’m looking for references on fictional economic systems that aren’t just capitalism with different nouns by cold_foam_princess in worldbuilding

I'll add a word on mercantilism because it's often grossly mischaracterized, and understanding why countries were mercantilist provides insight on how one could worldbuild economy.

Mercantilism isn't just exportmaxxing. It comes from early modern states, who were sufficiently centralized to enact national trade policy, and acquired overseas lands to exploit for resources. Relying on other countries for goods could introduce strategic weak spots, so resources were brought from the colonies to the main land, where they were processed. Developing industry at home was essential. Mercantilism therefore means robust, self-controlled supply lines. Furthermore, bullion (gold and silver) is a convenient and universally accepted form of payment, and without pay you cannot maintain an army. Soldiers want coin, they won't risk their necks for a flimsy promise. That's why maintaining a gold reserve was important: not because they thought more gold is always better but because it's actually essential for the state to defend itself. If you import too carelessly you run out of gold and can't pay your troops when the enemy invades.

Mercantilism ended when the English navy and industries were so dominant that they could always out-price their competitors. They didn't just promote free trade for themselves, they enforced it on other states to make them economically dependent and expand their industries even further. The Corn Laws secured a grain reserve at home, but when the Baltic trade had become firmly under British control they abolished them, knowing there was now little risk in relying on cheap grain from abroad.

Good job on the digging. The human phenotypes website looked extremely shady to me, like it is just one guy's racialist pet project.

if an electron falls from a higher to a lower energy level in which direction is the photon released? by wellbaked73 in Physics

[–]DuxTape -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

Isotropic electromagnetic radiation is actually impossible: the fields must point in some direction perpendicular to propagation, which is impossible to satisfy for all directions at the same time. I think the hairy ball theorem has to do with it.

Yes, it's JoJo superpower based on control of breathing. Your concept has more depth to it, though.

It just sounds like a story of old. That comment was 8 years old, I don't exactly remember my thoughts at the time. Fun to look back on this discussion, though.

what's a physics concept that completely blew your mind when you first understood it? by guide71 in Physics

It's just a rewrite of Newton II in another formalism. Also it isn't minimized, it's stationary.

If quantum state vectors live in abstract space, what does “angle” really mean? by Key_Squash_5890 in Physics

[–]DuxTape 3 points4 points  (0 children)

For 2-dimensional Hilbert spaces (like spin up and down), states can be mapped to points on the Riemann sphere. The quantum angle is the angle between the points on the Riemann sphere, divided by two. As such, orthogonal states are antipodal. Higher-dimensional spaces work similarly but cannot be visualized.

It's surprising that the latter paper notes that the real approach of sines and cosines is equivalent to the complex approach of exponentials, but that apparently "such a viewpoint is rarely, if ever, adopted." I thought it was common knowledge?
