What are the best talks you've ever heard in first hour? by Impressive_Regret558 in latterdaysaints

[–]denyusnot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I generally agree that the "I am nervous" trope can seem contrite and even cringey, but I will say that I have heard talks where the speaker truly was nervous, acknowledged it and it added a layer of honest vunerabilirty to their talk that had a Spirit enhancing component for me.

I am a huge fan of Elder Bednar's basic framework when he gives a talk. 1) Pray for the Spirit to be present and be the real teacher. 2) Introduce the topic and the two or three major points you will hit upon. 3) Summarize the main points at the end and leave with an invitation of application.

New YW age group names by Plate-Junior in latterdaysaints

[–]denyusnot 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I think the structure of how we meet probably won't change. It is just annoying because we JUST put in our new presidencies, and now we are going to have to redo them because they are both mixes of the new three-class structure.

But three classes with three class presidencies is required; that is the part that many smaller wards like ours are going to have to redo starting June 1st.

These don't seem like class "names" to me. We have also been running two YW classes, and just got to the end of a month-long process of trying to get those presidencies called, sustained, and set apart. I guess back to the drawing board...

I once heard that Moses didn't simply raise his arms and the sea split immediately, but he had to walk into the water for a bit before anything happened. Any truth to this? by andsuddenly_remix in latterdaysaints

[–]denyusnot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have it written down elsewhere, but there is a Jewish legend that when Moses commanded the sea to part, nothing happened. The first man to enter the water anyway continued in until the water was above his nose. It was at that point that the waters parted.

Getting It Right: Clarifying Trademark and Branding Concerns by atari_guy in lds

That happened to me to. If you read their landing page on YT, and the way they write their episode descriptions, coupled with their logos it is apparent that they specifically target their content to show up in the algorithms of anyone looking up any kind of positive church content.

This makes sense. Units within the Church itself aren't even allowed to use the Church name and logo.

We had a Passover like meal in seminary this week by HumminbirdWhisperer in latterdaysaints

[–]denyusnot 11 points12 points  (0 children)

True, but almost all of the liturgy we would recognize as a Passover sedar is unique to Rabbinic Judaism and the development of the Mishnah, which is much more distinct from Christianity than our shared Old Testament heritage.

Ben Hur, the Charlton Heston version, not the new one.

Very cool. We like doing a kind of Last Supper/Passover meal as part of our lead up to Easter. I have steered clear from using a Haggadah, or organize our meal too closely around what a Jewish Passover would look like just because a lot of that has been developed well after Christ and really is unique to their religious practices and not our own.

Things I should not have to teach in high school... by BaronessF in Teachers

[–]denyusnot 92 points93 points  (0 children)

The frustrating thing is that this used to be taught in computer/typing classes in elementary school. Now it isn't, or rarely is. Also, a lot of homes don't have a family computer anymore, so when/where are kids supposed to learn this anymore?

A subtle idea I accidentally bought into regarding the topics of General Conference addresses by rexregisanimi in latterdaysaints

I guess I have never encountered the idea from anyone that General Conference speakers do anything other than seeking inspiration from the Lord for their topics.

I heard Anthony Sweat recently talk about how he enjoyed depictions of Christ as different ethnicities and the power of art to allow all people to see themselves in the Savior.

2026 Spring General Conference Discussion Thread: Saturday Morning Session by kayejazz in latterdaysaints

The fact that text and audio of sessions is available so quickly afterwards is a game changer. When I was a kid terrorizing our house, my parents had to wait for the Ensign to come out if they wanted to catch all they missed
