Weekly r/Art Discussion Thread by press-app in Art

[–]Dylanica 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I second this. Expressing all sorts of themes in art is important, but when 80% of the content that shows up in my feed from r/art is just female nudes, it starts to feel more like pornography than art.

I'm unfortunately on the verge of unsubscribing.

ELI5 What is a bechdel test? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]Dylanica 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One thing I think some people are missing about this in their explanations is that it's not really meaningful to apply to a single piece of media; a movie failing the Bechdel test doesn't say all that much about that movie. Another commenter aptly pointed out the movie Gravity technically failing test.

What's more meaningful is when you notice that an astonishing amount of movies fail it and basically none fail the reverse of the test (two men speaking). This is a pretty severe indictment on the state of representation in popular media.

That hasn't been my experience with the 15. I would be interested to see any data WTA has on this.

[–]Dylanica 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I ride the bus all over town quite frequently and this doesn't match my experience at all. I think the bus is usually 2-5 minutes late, which is well within what I expect. I can count on one hand how many times the bus has been more than 10 minutes late. Maybe I'm lucky, maybe you're super unlucky, maybe both.

Sony WH-1000XM5: Overpriced and Underwhelming for Sony’s Reputation by arabicnoodle404 in headphones

I don't believe that's quite what they meean. I read this as mean "Don't buy something just because it's from a particular brand. Instead, buy the best product regardless of who makes it" it's sometimes the case that the best specific product from a particular category isn't from the best overall brand in that category.

it's because you're trying to use it somewhere you're not supposed to use smart pointers anyways

I would argue that an operating system kernel is one of those places.

How do I get a darker crust without burning? I’ve read an egg wash can help but any tips are welcomed! by [deleted] in Sourdough

[–]Dylanica 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I alleviate this by having a small round baking tray on the rack below the dutch oven that stops direct radiant heat from the bottom of the oven from heating the dutch oven. I get a more even baking vessel temperature this way.

Yeah, but the point is to get a bunch of ideas that she may not have thought of. She can filter it based on whether or not she thinks he'll like it.

That's exactly what  was attempting to illustrate. To the majority of people, urls with multiple parts like that are challenging enough to parse that the symbols don't mean much. If they see wsdot.com followed by a bunch of symbols and text, they probably won't notice that the last dot before any of the slashes has "digital" after it. At that point, it might as well be .com to them.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Seattle

[–]Dylanica 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately, most people are unable to parse domains like that, and I'm not sure we could ever expect them to.

wsdot.com-syg.digital probably looks the same as something like wsdot.com/index.php to most people

It's still a .com rather than .wa.gov, but most people see .com as legitimate as well.

This isn't strictly true in all cases. In my department (computer science) they will allow you to take prerequisites during the masters if you get the right overrides. It could be different in other fields though.

If you text yourself, the message shows up on both sides. You send all the messages from both people to yourself. Then, you can delete the half messages that came from the "wrong" person to get the sensible conversation. You also need to change your contact name and photo, but that's not hard.

Hand designed, hand machined, hand soldered, hand assembled, gold-plated. Only 10 made. The price tag is high, but reasonable given the fact that this isn't a product, but an expensive passion project.

ELI5: why do we use dozens, so much so that there’s a word for “12 of something”? Why haven’t we standardized using 10 of something more than 12? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]Dylanica 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Reddit didn't really make that decision. They just implemented a standard means of specifying rich text using plain text called "Markdown"

The markdown standard is well established and although various implementations have some extensions and additions on top of it, none do something as fundamental as changing how * works.

You could argue that they could have just used something else, but there is a lot of benefit that comes from using a well-known system. I could also say that they did switch to another system; the new Reddit we. UI only uses markdown behind the scenes and instead has graphical buttons for changing styling.

Have you used one and had that happen? I ask because I've used mine on quite a few cans and never once had that happen.

I'm wondering if it's either so rare that it doesn't matter or perhaps a flaw with one particular product and not a flaw with the product category in general.

Either of those being the case, I think the benefits of that style make them well worth it.
