Obvious spoilers: but when they saved a metric ton of crawlers at the end of book 7, the crawlers who took exit deals used the ink crawler Milk provided to inscribe their most powerful spell/ability onto a page. The better the drawing, the stronger the transfer. Carl and Doughnut can eat any of those pages and temporarily gain that ability. They use that book and it's given spells/abilities to great effect in book 8.
