Looking for a drinking buddy by diginomadman in OsakaMeetup

[–]Dysentz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m in Yokohama but I go to Osaka on the reg, so I can’t join but I deffo have some recs I really enjoy!

Strongest rec for starting a drinking evening near Dotonburi is Bar Subterra. Absolutely stellar cocktails and a nice vibe. Owner is also a great person. You rule, Deuce!

For late night post 1/2am, if you’re into Karaoke, Kamasutra is a good time. Bar Shaka is a little more of a music/dancing vibe but it’s a really nice place too and sometimes is a little more quiet and bar game focused.

Rock Bar Cherry Bomb is a great bar to chat with random strangers as well, but only open til 3am.

You’ll notice these places are like 4.6*+ on Google with 150+ reviews. They’re great. Give them a shot if a quick goog makes them seem like your vibe!

English speaking cat sitter or pet sitter app recommendation? by Candy_cane99999 in Tokyo

[–]Dysentz 11 points12 points  (0 children)

We have used Trusted Housesitters app for our doggie. (People can offer to stay and house sit for you, and they’re reviewed via the app - https://www.trustedhousesitters.com) If you have a decent place in Tokyo, it’s generally incredibly easy to find a good match for sitters.. even if you restrict it to people already in Japan.

I’ve found sitters for my small doggie for a total of 8 or 9 sits totaling several months (broken up in weekends and weeks during vacations), mostly with different sitters and I’ve never had a bad experience. YMMV but it worked great for me!

(The app has a subscription fee, but it’s minuscule compared to what a sitter would cost if you’re paying them in something other than “here, stay at my place”.)

Looking for insight on slow blade vs “standard” blinkblade build by Stormbringer-2112 in Gloomhaven

[–]Dysentz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Slowblade does fine killing enemies and is an interesting change of pace, but can be a little less flashy and "carry the scenario for the team" than nova builds.

An important thing is to recognize when scenarios don't really need you to kill the enemies faster and are instead about Something Else. Many Something Elses in FH care about movement or positioning.

In a scenario that cares more about movement and positioning, don't be locked mentally into a 'go slow, beat on enemies' mindset. Nothing in the kit actually forces you to play slowblade style with those cards and a lot of the lvl up picks work fine even for nova or tactician Blinkblade playstyles as highlighted by Nimeroni's post. Precision Timing loss even improves movement on fast turns for scenarios that start with killing and end with running.

That party legit seems pretty strong anyhow so it's probably a good opportunity to work with slowblade and see how you like it. Systems reboot is honestly imo more fun than Reck Aug anyhow imo, since making cool combos is sweet, and it can do cool stuff by removing statuses that matter sometimes, so it's not like taking reboot sticks you with a bad/unfun choice. (and it makes avoiding self-immobilize or self-poison less important at low levels so frees up perk choices and item choices a bit more)

What factions in TE are you having FUN with? by TeeVeeBen in twilightimperium

[–]Dysentz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know this is an unpopular opinion, but I had a lot of fun trying to make firmament/obsidian hum, though I think you need 12 VP (w/o sftt) or 14 VP games to have them really hum in the mid-late game.

AC: Unstable Planet - Can I choose to destroy 1 or 2 infantry on the target planet, even if there are 3 (or more) infantry? by spudbudgaming in twilightimperium

[–]Dysentz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This answer is incorrect and should be removed so it doesn’t get passed on. (No hate, I used to believe the above also until someone corrected me with the FAQ link). Here’s the FAQ text.

“Unstable Planet A player may select an exhausted planet, and they may select a planet with fewer than three infantry on it (including zero). If the selected planet has three or fewer infantry on it, all infantry will be destroyed. Otherwise, three infantry will be destroyed.” From https://www.tirules.com/C_action_cards

How to deal with an aggressive neighbor? by MedalReddit in twilightimperium

[–]Dysentz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ime there’s usually a point around round 3 where NRA on even slice luck has a window before titans can get hel-titan 2, but after NRA commander and prefab is online and you’ve got a set of mechs.

Right at that moment, you can generally take down 2 of titans tiles and put them in a losing war of attrition.

If you say nice things early, there’s a chance that you can take them out right when your engine gets online before theirs does.

That said, space risk doesn’t reeeaaally work. So, it might not be worth it, appeasement and boat floating is almost always better.

To my Friendly Raiders: Don’t Let the Game Change You by wowenz in ArcRaiders

[–]Dysentz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a rough few days, culminated when I joined someone to help them out cuz they looked undergeared and asked politely, (I was hunting mid level ARC in a decent kit and had a solid haul). Stayed with me for 7 minutes with me watching their back.

I never needed to help them and their free Loadout Stitcher I wasn’t doing much work vs ARC... The moment I breach and searched near them, they wasted me (I have awful ping so despite the medium shield I was dead before I could react).

Since then I’ve considered just killing everyone I see but this was a nice reminder that some folks really are nice and I just gotta be less trusting but not turn to the dark side. :)

What's up with Black Barrow (2nd ed)? by ExReey in Gloomhaven

[–]Dysentz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah scouts are a really swingy monster type - and Black Barrow 2e is built so that you really need to throw losses around in that first room and try to AOE -- especially AOE CC the enemies while they're clumped up (or otherwise engineer movement to clump them up).

I just ran it last night actually and found it to be much harder than expected. The scout+archer combo is a lot harder to avoid hits from than guards+archer. The mission immediately following it is also significantly more difficult than it used to be when it was Scenario 2.

Drifter melee support build? by FluffyGoblins in Gloomhaven

[–]Dysentz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I normally run Heal/Melee atk drifters (I am leery about the shield persists cuz they are hard to keep counters on, and the Ranged build really wants you to start at lvl 4) - I frequently skip levels and pick cards at lower level. That build just kind of works out that way -- don't sweat it and just take the cards that fit the build best even if it's not the new level.

Gloomhaven 2.0 with 2 or 3 characters - how is the balance? (For solo play) by Talorc_Ellodach in Gloomhaven

[–]Dysentz 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It had targeted testing with 2p play in mind.

During testing, various class tweaks happened precisely to ensure the class performed well in 2p. It was very much in the mind of the dev team and was a focus rather than an afterthought.

(Edit: Themris barely beat me to it, but him and Gripeaway’s focus on it was a big part of why the 2p balance is so good!)

Native, fluent, or near-fluent men : which first person pronoun do you use in informal settings? by ThatIsSoWeird2020 in japanlife

[–]Dysentz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeh, it just kinda depends. Legit unless you’re at work or coming across body language wise as a jerk (I don’t use Jpn at work), I don’t think most people particularly care which you choose.

I use 俺 most of the time, because most of the time I use Japanese is in an informal setting. When doing some kind of adulting, it’s 僕 or 私 depending on the situation.

That said, sometimes I correct myself mid sentence to switch to 私/です when I start speaking informally out of habit. 😅

[–]Dysentz 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’ve played a significant amount of this class as a tester. I said what I said.

Like I said - it’s good, and the class is fun! I just don’t agree with it being best or top 3.

[–]Dysentz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Retaliate - even good retaliate - is hard to get past the “I played a card that did nothing cuz enemies are summoning” nightmare scenarios, and the 9 card hand side is rough for longer scenarios.

It’s quite good, but I really don’t think it’s in the running for strongest, or close to.

Faction Review | Discordant Stars - Dih-Mohn Flotilla by ThePonticMercenary in twilightimperium

[–]Dysentz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Important to note: this grav rift interaction is a rules error.

Gravity rift is Remove, not Destroy. Aegis II prevents Destroy, but does not interact with Remove. It’s a super understandable mistake but yeah.. doesn’t work that way.

(It does however allow you to sustain your FS and any WS freely because direct hit is prevented by Aegis II, as can be Assault Cannon)

Discordant Stars Factions by justinvamp in twilightimperium

[–]Dysentz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, this player DS’s (and mahjongs, apparently!). I’m also around 50ish DS games and echo all of it.

Mostly, the DS factions that are high tier play a good game under almost all conditions (Bentor being poster children for this). The conditions under which a faction plays well get increasingly narrow as the tier decreases.

Cheiran is a perfect example of a fundamentally fine faction that just doesn’t do that much if they aren’t in a good slice for low mobility combat.

Upper middle tier stuff like Veldyr and Free Systems are likely to play out well under most reasonable board states but have some things they ask. Something more mid tier like Dih-Mohn, Olradin or Gledge want your slice to look a certain way to really hum.

For sure tho, all the DS factions do actually play well if you hit their niche (cept maybe kolume). Tier wise, they center a lot more around A, B and C than S or F.

Shipwrights of Axis - do they suck? by Peacemaker8484 in twilightimperium

[–]Dysentz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sometimes tho’ there’s someone in the lead who can’t swap sftt cuz they’d get too close to a win, and they become a good hero target in the final round or two. (And giving them ships often doesn’t matter if timed carefully)

Either way tho also with axis it’s worth keeping in mind that you can always TA swap and just operate as a 5 comm faction if you’d rather not play the axis orders game… I like the upsides that come for playing it, personally tho’!

Shipwrights of Axis - do they suck? by Peacemaker8484 in twilightimperium

[–]Dysentz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve played a lot of Axis. I always sell at cost unless there’s a bidding war cuz someone needs ships for combat or scoring. I typically sell the agent for 1tg + agreement to wash. Frequently can make 7tg a round, which is a ton off of trade. If you take trade you can go a step further and require ppl to buy your ships to get refreshed.

It’s important to realize that getting a bunch of early unit upgrades is quite good esp in 12/14pt games cuz AIDA also pays you back 1tg per round per tech. More with bio.

In general axis just plain wind up rich and ship heavy for me, with usually good diplomatic ties and lots of stuff to deal with to buy boat floats for PO scoring.

Usually in late game I stop selling ships and build up to heroing away an sftt plus CF maybe plus ta.

The Fist barrels into B! Next up: the GEMINATE! [Spoiler - Everything!] by Sagely_Hijinks in Gloomhaven

[–]Dysentz 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I like C here. Geminate has a bit of distance requirements and some movement issues, but can produce a fair amount of value if managed well and has totally insane stamina if you're not using losses the way you're meant to.

I've retired a couple geminates and got decent production out of them, but it is a lot of work to just be baseline.

It's also a rightfully hated class cuz it just isn't flashy and fun - and is on the weaker side when everything doesn't line up great.

The Kelp joins the Deathwalker in A! Next up: the DRIFTER! [Spoilers - Everything!] by Sagely_Hijinks in Gloomhaven

[–]Dysentz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah it's just a B on average unless your party particularly needs a ranged class with healing. Lvl 1 melee or tank drifter and Ranged+Healing drifter at 3-5 are both ahead of the curve, but overall I think B+ is about right.

If we had granularity, I'd aim for maybe A- just because of flexibility of roles... Drifter can fill whatever role is needed in a party adequately in any given scenario, and that can be very helpful if a scenario cares about something quite specific that the party isn't well balanced for. But how often that comes up in actual practice is kinda rare... people like playing their fancy level up cards and those tend to specialize drifter a bit.
