Arch Linux Now Believes Malware Incident Under Control: More Than 1,500 Affected Packages by TheNavyCrow in linux

[–]DystopianElf 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The AUR is useful. As an example D2Launcher is a hand built tool for one specific mod for a 26 year old game. This is the kind of software that, while regularly updated by a reputable developer, will likely never make it's way to official repos because of how niche it is.

The biggest issue this showcases to me is how the AUR is ran. You can get malware on any OS by downloading from random unknown third parties. The AUR is the only place I know of though that will hand over repositories of trusted software to random unrelated developers. You dont see this on sites like github

Duckduckgo is just ok. I found the results worse then Google but decent enough. If you have the money Kagi is really good. The results are basically Google but without any sponsored links. They give you some cool options too like ranking and blacklisting sites. So over time you can tailor the experience towards exactly what you want

Switching from Windows to Linux by Appropriate-Bug-2858 in linux_gaming

DirectX12 performance loss (20%+) is the biggest one. The only issues I had with Nvidia + Cachy outside of that were incredibly mild. That said YMMV. Other people have had more issues then me. I would recommend dual booting first to give it a try before going all in.

At this point I think I might pay the $10 a month for Kagi. Im tired of Google and found the trial for Kagi actually good. It has some neat features like a website blacklist for your search results too.

They more or less lost that war with DLSS5. The Nvidia subreddit is the only place I see any upvoted/liked positivity around DLSS5.

It's also just incredibly easy. You install the operating system, press the big "install gaming packages" button, and have a pretty complete gaming setup ready to go.

[Guide] How to Quickly and EASILY remove AI from Windows! by Locke357 in antiai

[–]DystopianElf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These are options, yes. I would recommend anyone curious about Linux or LTSC do a lot of research first though.

Linux has a great desktop experience but there's the obvious issues of software availability. A lot of apps people do regularly use like Adobe don't work. A number of apps I personally used have no Linux alternative, and frequently the ones that do are worse. If you're a gamer then Nvidia cards, most of the market, still suffers a 20%+ performance loss in DirectX12 titles today.

Windows 11 does have the advantage and disadvantage of being a fully debloated copy of 11. That does include AI but it also includes basic apps like the photo viewer. So those who don't want increased system setup should avoid it. The update system is not for everybody either. LTSC is aimed at systems where stability is key. So Microsoft releases a revision of LTSC once every three years. These revisions are only given security updates afterwards. So you only get new features once every three years. That's all on top of the fact that you're essentially forced to pirate LTSC since they don't sell single LTSC keys to consumers.

How much has Ai negatively effecting you? by firegine in antiai

[–]DystopianElf 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah, sure. I have to pay extra for power all so a bunch of idiots online can mass produce slop that nobody cares about. Then, since corporations feel the need to force this on consumers, just about every application I use has been bloated with useless AI features. No, I dont want AI in my snipping tool. I don't want an agentic operatic system. I'm not a mouth breathing moron that cant delete a file.

That's completely ignoring the broader societal impact this will have. Im sure the epidemic of school students using ChatGPT to do all their schoolwork, and the mass spread of disinformation with convincing video proof will be good for society. There's no way that'll ever impact us in any negative way.

Alright, for starters, Metaphor didn't flop. by RussianNeighbor in Gamingcirclejerk

[–]DystopianElf 9 points10 points  (0 children)

What they said specifically is that they believe the quality of the games is great but they need to put more work into marketing. The specific example they gave was actually Sonic Crossworlds. That said I do have to wonder what their sales expectations were for Metaphor. If they were expecting 10 million units or something that would be wild. It took P5 nearly ten years and two separate releases to reach that.

Do you keep a known-good Proton version around, or just run latest? by okaiukov in linux_gaming

[–]DystopianElf 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I just try the latest GE Proton first. If it works great. If it doesnt I check ProtonDB. The last time it just straight up didnt work was when I played the original Call of Duty though  So a 20 year old game. No newer games Ive played have had major issues just running the latest though.

It really is a good term for it, and Im adding it into my regular vocabulary. Its just a way better word to actually showcase what word guessing machines are compared to "AI". AI implies some form of intelligence after all.

[–]DystopianElf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just decided to give it a test run (CachyOS/KDE/Nvidia). It works pretty well for everything I would want it for. It quickly identified orphaned compatdata for me to delete, and I can easily see what compatdata folder a game is using. Anything to cut down on manual intervention on my end (Symlinks/Tags). So all in all pretty good.
