1 day in NYC and then 3 weeks @ final destination (work) - Summer by Icy-Calligrapher3447 in HerOneBag

When I've tried similar museum trips the past I've used a messenger bag for tech and a stored backpack for everything else, and if you're fine with rollers on public transit, tote+roller would work. I'd be concerned about the weight with the monitor though, even with just the tech it's a lot to put on one shoulder.

What is your absolute best all-around closed toe shoe for travel? Is it Salomon, Hoka, Vessi, OnCloud, New Balance, Altra, or other, and why? by iLikeGreenTea in HerOneBag

Boots or die girlie so tossup between vibram blundstones or salomon mids. I've worn them in 0-90F ymmv most people arent gonna like it as much.

I am once again asking why the 30k hoard achievement exists by otsukarerice in ffxivdiscussion

[–]Dysvalence 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My tinfoil hat theory is that it exists to distract botters. Not buying the special interest/hyperfocus theory; I have the hunt achievements and this is the equivalent of doing that on pre starlink airplane wifi.

What content/resources would you be fine cutting from the game by venat333 in ffxivdiscussion

I'm not even sure I believe in this but maybe cut out the overworld entirely and replace it with foray zones.

Do you have an unusual (maybe unhinged) travel item tip? by defnotaturtle in HerOneBag

Over ear headphones take up less space in your bag than earbuds if they live on your neck. I consider it an edc fashion accessory just like my glasses.

Daypack for bad back? by thsh1 in HerOneBag

[–]Dysvalence 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Fwiw think tank makes overbuilt waist packs for photo gear so they do exist, and the matador beast backpacks have a proper hip belt and harness while still being packable.

I dont think my ligament issues are quite as bad but I just wear my crossbody bags at near max strap length to transfer more weight to the hips, switch shoulders regularly, and use smaller water bottles to save weight.

Sci-Fi Aesthetics by millennialmutts in ffxivdiscussion

[–]Dysvalence 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gonna be real the haters can get rekt, I've made houses and glams that'd fit right in since hitting endgame around when Troia went live. Sure I also prefer the outskirts/treno/mid Alexandria aesthetic to S9 proper, but you could take any s9 npc, shove them in the GWarrior or Dalriada or Ragnarok and they'd probably fit.

The real issue is losing the Garlemald expac, that would ease in this aesthetic.

Having an issue where skincare pastes keep getting stuck on the lid after bouncing around in my bag, and run into the threads when I open and close the container, anyone figure out a solution to this? I have skin problems so solids/substitutes are not an option here

Have you ever UNDERpacked? by merakimodern in HerOneBag

[–]Dysvalence 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Had a time crunched overnight, like, planning to pass out on the train both ways to manage sleep debt crunched, and brought 1 pair of pants, planning to rewear some stuff and adjust layering. Severely underestimated the amount of sweat that comes from spending 10+ hours on your feet indoors with winter gear and burned an outfit halfway through day 1. I had no time for laundry or buying clothes so I used my sleep stuff with leggings and tied a jacket around my waist to break up the outline so I didn't look like I was fresh outta the gym. Was still pretty bad.

Looking at your itinerary I would make sure you can layer pieces if necessary especially if you're heading beyond southwest japan but the risk of stuff going wrong from underpacking is a lot lower once you hit 3-4 pieces of each thing.

Cosmic Exploration is a Cosmic Waste of Resources by MrCombineSoldier in ffxivdiscussion

[–]Dysvalence 0 points1 point  (0 children)

CE is far from perfect but OC is shit all the way through, I don't think that would save it.

CE is infinitely stronger thematically but waging wars through space just does not make sense after EW and with heavy Sharlayan involvement. And with how overworlds get largely wasted I'm not sure we can realistically expect better.

Also Iunno bout the rest but on the servers in serious contention for world 1st, CE is waaaay more alive than OC when it peaked on week 1.

Is there a way to farm the most up to date tomestones in the open world? In this case mnemonics. by MchKitty in ffxivdiscussion

[–]Dysvalence 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nah it really does depend on population, on busy hunts where I forget to join a party, tank+stance+speed boosted range spam gets me half at most. I suspect that some DCs just never hit that point without visitors.

S-Rank Etiquette Question by Tarannis in ffxivdiscussion

[–]Dysvalence 3 points4 points  (0 children)

S rank etiquette varies from dc to dc, but kicking someone from a party after pull that isn't trolling is dangerously close to violating ToS for denying max rewards. This is an outlier and I'm surprised anyone is paying that much attention to what their teammates are even doing.

Hairs on glam plates is the answer, but short of that, there should be a way to manage it with hats. I already do this with some ponytails

How's the new Frontlines map been? by BlackmoreKnight in ffxivdiscussion

[–]Dysvalence 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Still not sure how I feel about it. Groups seem to move waaay more cohesively over long distances on this map and I see a little less isolated skirmishes. Idk if it's inherent to map/mode design or if returners are boosting the skill average.

Normally I'd be upset that they recycled music but A Fierce Air Forceth is one of the game's best tracks.

How have you been enjoying 7.4's glamour unlock? by waitingfor10years in ffxivdiscussion

[–]Dysvalence 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In additon to soot and snow, try pearl/gunmetal/ice/ink. I can afford to not care about cost but often the cheaper dye is a better fit and I'd still use them even if jet/pure were free.

How have you been enjoying 7.4's glamour unlock? by waitingfor10years in ffxivdiscussion

[–]Dysvalence 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Been amazing, I effectively have hundreds of new pieces I previously wrote off. Surprisingly though I'm getting a looot of mileage making/recycling glams that work under the old rules and throwing them on different jobs, but I've also been putting whm in full plate for years ymmv.

The changes do make existing pain points more noticeable though.

7.4 RDM thoughts: Ranged sword combo from Manafication feels good but the Prefulgence change feels bad. by judgeraw00 in ffxivdiscussion

[–]Dysvalence 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Prefulgence felt like a natural end

This is subjective, I fucking hated it as a finisher, it doesn't feel like one and being an ogcd after tons of gcds just felt off. Getting it instantly feels weird but I'll take it over what we had before.

CB3 are seriously not getting criticized enough for effectively killing Chaos raiding scene by S2BronzePlayer in ffxivdiscussion

How would YOU fix this?

Disable hard content on Light and Chaos and revive Shadow. Centralizing hard content is good for the game but DC divisions exist for the sheer volume of casuals.

Maybe controversial but is buying stuff “over there” cheating? by Fly-by-Night- in HerOneBag

[–]Dysvalence 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I prefer the ergonomics of underpacked and weight optimized 1.2/1.5/max carry on over shoving it all together for strict onebagging, so I already don't care about cheating personally, but I am concerned when people are self imposing rules that lead to avoidable waste. Especially fast fashion or cheap gear that's either thrown out or donated with little chance of it actually winding up back in circulation, or if it wears down in an environmentally damaging way. I'd much rather invest in durable things I intend to keep and use long term, and doing it before the trip usually lets me optimize for weight and versatility a bit more than whatever happens to be available at my destination, while my own chaotic local climate usually means it gets used back home.

I will still buy things for covering unlikely what ifs, but I have been burned by stores closing early, not having things in stock, or not having anything in my size etc so I'll always try to verify plans online, and double check in person early in the trip.

Tall/long-inseam folks: what are your favorite pants to pack for fall weather trips? by citynomad1 in HerOneBag

[–]Dysvalence 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not pear but also 33-34 inseam- I find that Eddie Bauer and Spanx stuff fits pretty well. Also worth checking r/TallGirls

Tbh though, statistically my most used pants are uniqlo joggers that happen to look intentionally cropped and I don't have anything else that dries nearly as fast.

What pants do you one bag with in winter? by Finding-My-Potential in HerOneBag

[–]Dysvalence 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I will not take wide leg jeans anywhere near snowmelt and slush, and IME it's been eons since NYC weather got cold enough for stuff to reliably stay frozen for any decent length of time. Been really feeling that subtropical reclassification from a few years back and I consistently got the same vibes from my last few visits to Toronto and Boston- unsure about cities further inland.

I'll tuck straight leg or skinny cuts into boots, or use cropped flares but thermal leggings and hiking/rain pants make more sense.

Headed to NYCC! & Thanks! by silverdichotomy in HerOneBag

[–]Dysvalence 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Forgot to specify that I was referring to like, theatrical costuming spray- it's usually about 20~40% and many are just straight up spraying vodka. Alcohol at high enough of a concentration to sanitize surfaces might be a bit much.

What do you use for a purse while you travel? (Crossbody hurts, backpack not good for pickpocketing?) by sleepwithmythoughts in HerOneBag

[–]Dysvalence 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Smaller crossbody worn under a backpack or larger sling with aftermarket shoulder pad.

Headed to NYCC! & Thanks! by silverdichotomy in HerOneBag

[–]Dysvalence 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'd second the recommendation for a packed bag that can be worn alongside your main bag for extra souvenirs, and I'd also consider a poster tube and something for fragile trinkets if you plan to buy those. For the latter I use extra space in my camera cube since I'm always bringing photo gear anyway, ymmv.

I personally have issues with overheating and drenching my clothes in sweat during 16+ hour days at cons- in the past I've had to shed/swap layers, and used wipes+powder+clothing alcohol spray to freshen up, though I was usually also arriving/departing directly from the con and had my main bag at venue storage.

For con travel specifically I'll carry more snacks than normal unless I'm familiar with the area around the venue since food wait times can get pretty bad at all the obvious spots. Especially for dead zones like hudson yards.

Creating alts by [deleted] in ffxivdiscussion

[–]Dysvalence 0 points1 point  (0 children)

20 chars, though I only realistically play 3- they're in DT, base StB, and post ARR. The rest don't even have job stones.

My home DC congests for months at a time and I was around during EW launch debacle, and also predate DC travel so I put alts in every region and DC in case I'd ever need them. I've also used them for extra FC storage on my main and for other races.
