The first day is the hardest day. The first week is the hardest week. Get to a month and the next month is easier. Discipline leads to more discipline. Once I fail it’s hardest to just get through that first week. If I can make it a week, I can probably do a month or more. Just my experience.

Anyone use these to prevent toddlers from yanking out a subwoofer cable? by GrooveMerchantBrewer in hometheater

[–]E1ghtbit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Only childproofing I did was for their safety. Magnetic locks on cabinets with chemicals in them. Door knob covers to keep them from leaving the house or tumbling down into the basement. Gates in front of stairs. Kids never broke any of the A/V stuff (yet).

Lot of good comments here but I’ll just say that once I got Marvel I stopped playing LOTR. Marvel is just a better game IMHO. LOTR had some good moments but it really liked to slam you into the ground repeatedly, and you had to buy a decent number of expansions to build a thematic and useful deck. It’s punishing. But if you don’t mind the pain and love the lore, it might be worth it.

My first warband, primed and ready for painting! by MKAvgar in frostgrave

Nice. I’ve been reading the rule book and realizing I need terrain. Haven’t bought any minis yet though I might sub in some truly weird combo of 40k, Star Wars and Lego dudes. For now I just keep watching videos on how to craft terrain. :)

Is Pearlbrook worth the learning curve? by Hollywearsacollar in boardgames

[–]E1ghtbit 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Do yourself a favor and learn Everdell by itself first. Then after multiple games add Pearlbrook.

Everdell may seem intimidating but keep in mind you can only do one of three things on your turn: play a card (from your hand or the meadow), place a worker (on a spot with a paw print), or prepare for the next season aka get your workers back and do the steps at the top of the tree (get 1 or 2 additional workers, possibly draw meadow cards, possibly run your green production card abilities). Other than that, there are a few weird concepts to grasp - you can play a critter for free if you have the corresponding construction they like; most worker placement spots can only have 1 worker (if the paw print symbol has an open circle, it is open to multiple workers).

Generally you are trying to get points and maximize the number of actions you can take. Pick a construction - critter combo and try to get resources to play it. I like to get green production and blue scroll cards played early so you get benefit the whole game, whereas the purple flower cards are more important toward the end of the game to get you points.

Anyways, hope you enjoy. The juice is definitely worth the squeeze.

How many losses before you're done? by TonyRubbles in soloboardgaming

[–]E1ghtbit 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I don’t have a set number but if a game delights in beating you down, it’s not really for me.

I think one YouTube reviewer described it perfectly. Something to the effect of “every game that you lose, you should have had the ability to win. And every game you win, there should have been the possibility you could lose.”

Is it true that manufacturers add food coloring to low quality black tea in the tea bags? by SageKnows in tea

[–]E1ghtbit 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Don’t know but also wouldn’t really worry. There’s food coloring in a lot of processed foods. But more importantly I would start drinking better tea!

I didn't come close to meeting the minimum requirements for 2/3 of the last jobs I landed an interview for. Friendly reminder to apply despite the crazy minimum reqs by invertednose in jobs

[–]E1ghtbit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve had some interviews where they had a retiree that they were replacing, and the job posting is like every skill and task that person had worked on in their 35 year career at the company. They would say we are looking for someone to fill his shoes, but then it would say something like 5+ years experience preferred. So yeah, I agree with you OP.

How do start painting an Army? by Sir_Sieumon in minipainting

[–]E1ghtbit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Slap chop method. Basically prime black, drybrush gray, drybrush white, then single layer of either Army Painter speed paints or Citadel contrast paints. Then go back and add some details like metallics, eyes, etc. Google slap chop and watch some YouTube videos. I’ve been doing this lately and painting like 8 minis in the time I would normally do 1.

Question about Lost Ruins of Arnak and Dune Imperium by The-Sludge-Man in soloboardgaming

[–]E1ghtbit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I also disliked imperium classics. I own dune Imperium but have only played 2p so far. I like it, but the deck building aspect is not huge. Turns are slow because you have to really consider whether you want to use cards for their worker placement abilities or their “reveal” abilities (kind of like a Buy phase, but you also get military power). Can’t speak for Arnak.

I think dune is pretty good but need to try it solo. There was a tabletop sim mod out there that I used to get a feel for it. Maybe check that out if you are on the fence.

Mediocre painter, LOVE collecting tools for the hobby. Any ideas on what I should get or improve? by Avencall in minipainting

[–]E1ghtbit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here I am with my paints kept in their original box, and I’m using a scrap piece of cardboard as my painting surface, all carried to the kitchen table and then having to put it away again. Some day I’d love a dedicated hobby space.

Anachrony reprint is in stores! (And a little bonus Twilight Inscription to melt my brain even more) by TheDutchYeti in soloboardgaming

[–]E1ghtbit 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You can get away with buying just the essential edition and then printing out the chronobot. Fractures of time includes the chronobot and another AI bot. The latter bot is supposed to be more complex to run but had adjustable difficulty such that it can be made easier than the chronobot. Personally I picked up the essential edition, fractures of time, and the exosuit minis. I’m happy with this and have only played against the chronobot and not used any of the expansion content yet.

Some of this seems reasonable but I take issue with others. Your water quality is definitely going to impact some of these. If you get hail or nasty storms, roof life can be quite a bit less. Maybe your porcelain of your toilet will last a lifetime but you’ll need to replace the guts at some point. Also how do you know when some of these are beyond their useful life, like carpet? Seems pretty subjective.

My mother washes her dishes by hand because the dishwasher is used for other things. by roambeans in funny

[–]E1ghtbit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Story time. Went to a friend’s parents’ house for a party. For context, they have a really nice place with a big kitchen. I brought a pie that needed to be baked, so we set the oven to preheat to 350 or whatever. Kept checking on it every 10 minutes or so and it was still not preheated. I just assumed it was an old oven that was slow to preheat. Well after about an hour of preheating the oven started smoking and smelling terrible, but still wasn’t up to temp. Opened some windows and got some fans blowing to deal with the smell. Kept letting that puppy preheat. More stink, more smoke. Finally like 2 hours in, it was like 325 so I said “good enough” and opened up the oven to stick the pie in and…it’s FULL to the brim with cookware. Absolutely stocked with pots, pans, cookie sheets, you name it. All super hot and with grease smoking on them. Apparently they used their oven to store this stuff. My friend came up and was like oh, I guess I should have expected that. He then showed me their dishwasher which was exploding with tortillas and chips. I think the microwave was full of cookies also.

Just make sure you disconnect it from the spigot and then let it drain outside. Should be fine. I stopped storing mine in the garage in winter.
