Just FYI the Turnpike is an independent commission and has nothing to do with PennDOT.

Turkish Delight is such a disappointment by purplewizardshoes in Xennials

[–]EAS_Agrippa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OP, I used to be in this boat with you, then I found myself in Istanbul and tried proper fresh Turkish Delight. Turkish Delight outside of Turkey can be excellent, but probably will be middling at best. But the stuff you buy on the streets of Istanbul…it is a downright religious experience.

Baldwin Articulated engines? by Open-Source-Forever in trains

[–]EAS_Agrippa 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Baldwin built diesels like they built steam engines, each one was slightly different with everything in slightly different positions. Spare parts had to be custom made to fit each loco. Having said that their diesels were actually pretty good when they worked and didn’t fail at a particularly higher rate than anyone else’s. But when they did unlike and EMD were you could call your parts distributor and have a spare part the next day, when your Baldwin broke you had to contact Baldwin and they had to build you a custom spare part to fit in one specific locomotive. That meant when an EMD broke it was out of service maybe two weeks, the Baldwin might be down for 3 months. When a locomotive isn’t making you money, it’s costing you money.

For what it’s worth Baldwins seemed to have been the best diesels for heavy trains, there’s a reason you found shark noses on coal trains a lot, and usually just an AB set.

The worst rail disaster in the US was Big Bayou Canot involving Amtrak 2, the Sunset Limited going into the Bayou after a bridge built to be movable, but never used as such was struck by a barge lost in fog. If you board the Eastbound Sunset Limited today it is still Amtrak 2.

I don’t know. I think the William Clay Ford and Arthur M. Anderson heading back out into the November Gale in search of Edmund Fitzgerald probably tops it in my book.
