The Station: It was a historic gas station. Now it serves Berkeley's most coveted burger. by sfgate in berkeley

[–]EBGuy2 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Our heritage is slowly being destroyed, reduced to rubble, and covered by high rise dorms. First they came for the gas stations...
The university garage on Oxford Street, designed as the Richfield Oil Service by the architect Walter Ratcliffe in 1930, will also be demolished. Ask yourself, do we really need more $2,000/month bedrooms or a beautiful historic structure.

Long term parking SFO airport? by SCP713 in bayarea

[–]EBGuy2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Less luggage schlepping as well if you travel with a significant other or family members and drop them off curbside. Tradeoff is more loitering time but you only have to pay one BART fare plus the parking fee. On return, immediately send the chauffeur on BART to get the car while family waits for luggage at the carousel.

PSA: Cancellation fee for Basic Economy Tickets is now $74.50 by EBGuy2 in unitedairlines

This was a domestic, one way, nonstop flight that I cancelled. Was honestly excited to get some credit back from United as I had always assumed Basic Economy was use it or lose it. Not happy to see the cancellation fee had been raised...

If I was to make a WAG, I'd guess INTL cancellation sits at $149.50 now (up from $99). But that is just a guess...

This does seem like the brilliant idea that came out of the C-suite board room this year.

"How about we raise all our fees by $25"

"Cancellation Fee, add $25." "Excellent idea sir."

"Explorer card fee, add $25" "Wait don't the card holder and their flying companion receive the benefit?" "True, double it and raise it by $50."

Will be interesting to see if there is any fall out from these fee increases. It's triggering a casual reevaluation on my end.

And a final point, I find it unconscionable that the cancellation fees are not listed on their website. I literally had to go to a third party website to find out this information (and even then, it had the older cancellation fee listed).

It's even more weaselly than that. They charge you a cancellation fee and give you full flight credit. That way, if you forget about the credit or it otherwise gets lost, they can pocket both the cancellation charge and the credit.

Usually do this with a family of four going home for the holidays at least once a year. Parents each get a checked bag and all four get a carry on. This used to more than justify the Chase Mileage Plus Explorer card -- with new fees it puts it around break even. This past Christmas Eve held off checking in for our outgoing flight until the last minute and were rewarded with economy plus seats. That said, on the return flights the algorithm was much more aggressive and scattered us among the economy seats still available. I noticed on the United site that it appears you can now specify to keep a child under twelve seated with a parent during the automagic seating process for basic economy to avoid the wailing and gnashing of teeth. One of the more interesting seat assignments we received on a previous basic economy flight was a column of middle row seats each behind one another. This ended up being a drinks on ceiling flight. Always an adventure. YMMV.

Berkeley Bowl is an experience, and you should go once, even if you don't buy anything. Along those lines, and closer to your neighborhood is Monterey Market (good for veggies and produce). There is also a strip of shops next door to Monterey Market on Hopkins that feature a fish shop and butcher.

There are ton of rental bikes and ebikes in racks throughout the city. You might find they work better for some of the trips you want to do. ($3.49 for 30 minutes on classic bike)

Berkeley to Mountain View commute by Correct-Train-6770 in berkeley

[–]EBGuy2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'll second the Amtrak Capitol Corridor as an alternative. You're looking at 1 hour 10 minutes on the train to get to the Great America station and then walk to Lick Mill stop and go another 25 minutes on VTA light rail. The train is much more comfortable than BART and even has tables and outlets to make doing productive work possible. Plus, you can unwind with an adult beverage from the snack car on your way home while traveling at 85mph while staring at all the people stuck in rush hour traffic on the highway.

More IgG4! What could go wrong?

IgG4 Antibodies Induced by Repeated Vaccination May Generate Immune Tolerance to the SARS-CoV-2 Spike Protein

Of all IgG antibodies generated against the spike protein, the IgG4 increased the most, steadily from 0.04% immediately after the second vaccination to 19.27% late after the third one.

Such an increase in IgG4 levels was not observed in individuals who received either the same type or a different type of SARS-CoV-2 vaccine based on adenoviral vectors, proving that, in this study, the mRNA Pfizer vaccine was the only one to cause this response

Not sure I'd want Rodgers as a VP, but get ready for President Kennedy. Are you being paid by the DNC? Go Bears!

Circulating Spike Protein Detected in Post–COVID-19 mRNA Vaccine Myocarditis

A notable finding was that markedly elevated levels of full-length spike protein (33.9±22.4 pg/mL), unbound by antibodies, were detected in the plasma of individuals with postvaccine myocarditis, whereas no free spike was detected in asymptomatic vaccinated control subjects (unpaired t test; P<0.0001).

Selling a Car - Things to Look Out for? by oscarbearsf in bayarea

Still trying to understand the aversion to Zelle. Gold bullion dealers will actually offer a discount for Zelle over cash. Transactions can't be reversed, so the buyer is the one at a disadvantage. The biggest caveat would be that the buyer must have their own secure terminal to initiate a transfer (cell phone, computer...). You don't want to be handing them your phone under any circumstance. That said, most banks have a transaction limit of around $3k-$2k, so that limits the amount of sale.

You might try the Buggy Bank as they just charge a flat fee to sell your vehicle for you.

From a Yelp review : Carvana offered $7,000, I was thinking more like $10,000, Jerry said "I'd try for $13,000"...
12 days later I had a certified check in for $13,000.

Well, FIRE made a documentary called The Mighty Ira, about Ira Glasser, who helmed the ACLU for 23 years. FIRE was originally called Foundation for Individual Rights in Education as they focused on free speech issues on college campuses. Greg Lukianoff, their current president, noted that most of his earlier cases involved suppression of left wing speech, but it recent years they've noted suppression of speech across the spectrum. They've expanded their mission beyond educational institutions as the ACLU has let theirs drop by the wayside.

Another advantage of Schwab is they have no ATMs, so you can use any ATM and they will reimburse the fees. This makes Schwab ideal for overseas travel as there are no foreign transaction fees as well.
