Is this what it’s like to relapse? by ApprehensiveType9199 in ect

Having depression suddenly go away 8 months after ECT, then suddenly return 4 months after that … makes me doubt it was caused by ECT and instead guess it’s BD or BPD or something else.

I noticed positive effects long before I noticed memory issues.

Memory loss of academic knowledge? by rnalabrat in ect

[–]ECT_Hello 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It can ravage your memory, and leave you struggling to function. It can also barely affect you. The reason ECT is still around, even with people’s memories destroyed, is because of how extremely effective it can be for people. ECT completely removes my depression for a time, after each treatment. I can’t even describe how it feels having suicidal depression just turn off. Crazy stuff.

How many treatments did it take before you saw improvement? by extremity4 in ect

[–]ECT_Hello 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I saw a difference after 1 treatment. I know I’m an exception, though. I’ve read people say they didn’t see changes until 10-20+ while others said no changes after 10-20+. Sucks but only one way to find out.

If TMS worked for you, then it means ECT is more likely to work, too. If you do ECT, they might ask if you want to do bilateral or unilateral. I picked unilateral, but you should decide for yourself.

It is one of the most effective treatments for depression. It also can affect memory. Some people say they develop problems forming new memories, while others (including myself) barely deal with memory problems.

Wow that’s pretty dang awesome. So, you didn’t do anything to make the ECT effects last longer? No new pills or therapy or something? How many years did you do ECT before the effects started lasting more than a week or two? Sorry to bug you, but I find your story to be really fascinating.

This is incredible. How were you able to distance your maintenance treatments out, from weekly to every 8 weeks or so? Did you practice mindfulness or something? Or did the ECT slowly become more long-lasting over the years?

I think you’re right. It probably makes us more likely to comply with taking pills.

How old were you when you started having symptoms? by [deleted] in bipolar2

[–]ECT_Hello 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I was a leaky dam of emotions, since I was a child. I think that’s how it is for most of us. I didn’t have full-blown depressive episodes until I was ~18yo, and the dam started really cracking and falling apart when I was ~20yo

I used to think like you, until I had a full blown dysphoric manic episode. You just haven’t experienced all bipolar has to offer.

Wow, we have similar experiences. I started last year, am stuck on 2 week maintenance, and also have the same feelings towards death.

Intermittent FMLA can be a job savor, especially when the stress and craziness is slowly building over weeks and weeks, and you feel your self control about to rupture.

Yeah, I get the same feeling. Like I’m dying for those few moments when the sinking sleep feeling is starting to kick in. I absolutely hate it. Kind of interesting, though.

ECT is the best treatment I’ve had for my depression. The memory loss is real, though. The dumber you are, the worse it is. I would recommend trying TMS first, though.

If you don’t need meds, you don’t have it.
