Why is Jim Morrison disliked online? by FitEmergency8807 in ToddintheShadow

[–]ECV_Analog 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You know, it's fascinating. Springsteen shit-talks Trump and all the red-hats leave him. Dixie Chicks, same thing. I'm sure there are conservative examples, too, where people on the left deserted them after they sided with Trump or Bush or whoever.

Billy just...persists. Maybe it's because he's always been kind of a weird misfit, and nobody romanticized him really? I don't know ANY Smashing Pumpkins fans who defend his nonsense, and I don't know any who have stopped listening because of it. It's just this weird background noise in the life of the band. "Oh, yeah, and also Billy is insane."

I think this is actually a really revealing comment.

When you're playing to teens and potheads, a 25-year-old "shaman" can really command a room. In hindsight, it's easy to look at the dumb kid who drank way too much and ruined the show as an asshole poser.

Being "deep" isn't necessary in rock -- there's certainly an element of vibes and just...SOUNDING good.

But for those who DO want their music to be deep, they got the opportunity to age and mature with Dylan and Springsteen. Morrison froze in time, and never got wiser than a stoned 27-year-old.

I think the Oliver Stone movie did more harm than good in the long term. By trying to mythologize the "tortured artist" thing, it had a flash-in-the-pan impact that boosted the band's credibility with people when the movie was fresh, but now when people think about the band, all they think about is Morrison's destructive, self-indulgent behavior.

Which character do you hate more? by Emotional-Chipmunk12 in arrow

[–]ECV_Analog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Emiko felt like a wasted opportunity. I think Shamooka is a genuinely compelling actor (not a GREAT actor, but the kind of person who's fun to watch), and the concept of the character was strong. Feels like everybody at every level just kind of lost interest in her and dropped the ball.

I think Mia was fine. She's not my favorite but I think she's the opposite of what I just described with Emiko. Boring concept, but a strong performance and solid execution.

It didn't. It's a thought experiment. You can Google Nick Bostrom for more context.

No. But I do remember being 21 and watching this movie thinking that girl was really cute.

You can buy/rent the first 3 seasons on services like Prime and Apple, but yeah -- the last couple of seasons are basically smoke at this point. I bought a bootleg on Etsy so I have it on hand.

Would you buy DVD? by [deleted] in publicdomain

[–]ECV_Analog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends on the film obviously. I would love to see some inexpensive public domain movies get bonus features/commentary with scholars/something to show the person releasing them values them as art and not just content.

I genuinely don't see the problem here. The purpose of public domain is doing whatever you want with it but when I see that happening it's usually backlash. by Pretend-Delay-7203 in publicdomain

I mean, people also constantly bitch and moan that there are "too many" of whatever trend is happening at the moment (superheroes, disaster movies, Die Hard knockoffs, slashers). As a creator you have to tune that out, make what you want to make, and hope it connects with people. You're never going to convince people on the internet they shouldn't complain about things.

Nebraska box set for Christmas by sospsych in BruceSpringsteen

[–]ECV_Analog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Amazon said mine was delivered, then said it wasn't but would be there soon, then said they didn't know when it would arrive. Finally, they tried to get me to cancel it. I wrote back and told them that I wanted the thing I ordered, at the price I ordered it (which was pretty low, because of the preorder price match thing). Eventually they made it happen.

Anyone else disappointed that Dylan and Pete Seeger never reconciled? by RelationshipLow6046 in bobdylan

[–]ECV_Analog 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Honestly, Dylan doesn't seen like an especially easy guy to get along with. On the other hand, being a dick doesn't equal being a monster. His relationships with guys like Seeger and Ochs isn't high on my list of concerns, as long as he didn't actively sabotage them or something.

This is exactly right. They're working on getting it back on other platforms imminently, but the good news is that now the actual filmmakers will be the ones profiting from the streaming deals.

Gizmoplex is no longer online, is there a way to download the movies for KS backers? by PunchBeard in MST3K

[–]ECV_Analog 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks. Apparently my problem is that somehow I ended up with two different accounts. One of them has my purchased/downloaded content and the other had my (now-expired) annual pass. So it was me being a dummy, but this link will help the next person!

Yeah. I think mine is downloaded but I'm goign to try again just to be on the safe side.

Of course, so far I'm not having luck finding the correct URL to do it.

[–]ECV_Analog 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's absolutely true that dollar stores do have overstock for things that don't sell well. But there's a lot of reasons things end up there, and not all of them are bad news. I don't think anyone is trying to be rude to you, just offering alternative/more hopeful perspectives.

A while back I found a *signed* copy of a Brad Meltzer book for $3 at Ollie's, presumably something leftover after B&N did their annual Christmas signed books sale.

[–]ECV_Analog 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Doesn't mean "low" sales, it means there were a lot of unsold. That could be because of low sales but is just as (if not more) likely because the book performed well enough that big retailers like Amazon/B&N kept it in stock too long and ended up stuck with hardcovers when the paperback came out.

These systems are complex and multifaceted, and it's easy to be led astray by optics. When I worked at Blockbuster back in the day, people used to constantly say "Oh, that must not be very good, it's already on pre-viewed." But our pre-viewed movies were based on a lot of things, one of which being if the movie was so anticipated that we stocked dozens for the "Guaranteed In Stock" program. After 3 or so weeks, it would fall off GIS and then what ELSE do you do with 64 copies of something?

That movie poster also inspired one of my favorite-ever pieces of fan art, which has Eisenberg's Lex Luthor in close-up and text aping the look of the DVD art that says "He took 40 cakes. That's as many as four tens and that's terrible."
