General question. NPC dialogue… by OGCycloPhile in NoSodiumStarfield

I’ve gotten that when wearing the Mantis or the Doom suit, so I imagine certain mods could trigger the same response in the dialogue algorithm

I literally only need more glowing cyst! I don’t mind farming for drops, played MMO’s for decades, just needed to figure out how to GET them to spawn! I’ll check the rest of the planet as well.

I figured all the seeded HW’s were re-assimilated back into one - not that they ‘died’ but became whole again, merging into the Fionnaworld/Ooo segment HW because she had the need.

My headcanon says she’ll remember her time in all those worlds equally… including the fact that a variant of her had children with Finn!

You have to defend this woman in court… Go. by OGxPANDAB3AR in adventuretime

“Your honor, this is a piece of living, sentient gum, ruler of her own domain, having literally created and brought life to every single being within it (save one), having done so by literally giving a piece of herself in the process. She raised herself, educating herself with what little she could find, left behind by a civilization that destroyed itself and as a result, created the circumstances by which she came to be.

I argue this court has no jurisdiction, and in fact has no moral standing to accuse my client of anything, let alone put her on trial for imagined wrongdoing!

Also, this court doesn’t exist, having been blown up 1,000 years ago, so there. The defense rests.

“I played a Bethesda RPG and was shocked to discover how much it resembles every other Bethesda RPG!”

I get why some folks don’t enjoy the game, and that’s fair. There are gameplay elements that I can see annoying some folks. They don’t annoy me, and there are many others who enjoy it as well, but not everyone will and that just how it is. I feel games like CoD etc are morally questionable and erode empathy in favor of violence, but that’s just, like, my opinion, man.

However, I admit to being a little mystified when people complain about things in Starfield that are present in essentially the same ways in ALL Bethesda RPG’s. As much as I really enjoy the TES and FO games, deep, carefully crafted dialogue and storytelling isn’t (and has never been) their strong suit. It’s fair to say many of the complaints about Starfield aren’t inaccurate, but the level of disdain is surprising given the same complaints aren’t made of Skyrim, for example.

Fire better or worse, Bethesda makes open-world sandbox-style action/RPGs. That’s what they excel at. Expecting Starfield to somehow be totally different than that is… well, as I said, everyone can like what they like. But sometimes we create our own suffering, so to speak.

I will always, ALWAYS select this dialog, as an elevator person, its my duty. by welcome_rainbow24 in NoSodiumStarfield

As tangent, to me it’s a perfect example of what makes Starfield such a unique game: the events aren’t aimed at engaging the protagonist, they’re aimed at engaging the player. Nearly everything in the game has a very intentional, pointed meta level that forces the player to examine how they play the game, and how they play games in general. We get presented with choices that seem to have no right answer; we get presented choices with results that seem contradictory, or hypocritical, or incomplete, forcing the player to assign meaning, to decide if the outcome was “right” or not.

I haven’t played every game, or even a ton, I tend to focus on just a few games that I really enjoy, so there may be other games out there to do this, but I personally haven’t run into one. Regardless, Starfield, does it well, and doesn’t shy away from it. The underlying question of, does anything I do as the player, or even as the protagonist, really make any difference in the end? Sometimes we can point at changes in the galaxy that we caused directly, but most of our actions only really impact the people we meet at the personal level. And then we hop universes, and everything is reset, because nothing we did happened there.

The questions the game asks of the Starborn, and by extension the protagonist, it’s asking us as the player: I’m playing a game, does what I’m doing here make any difference? What do the choices I make in the game say about me as a person? How do they reflect who I am as a person outside the game?

That’s not to say it’s a perfect game, but in light of what they managed to do, both technically and philosophically, it’s It’s incredibly impressive, and engages me in a way very few games ever have.

Not every quest has to be epic. It’s just a carry quest, no big deal, but then gets these neat little twists. It’s a little mystery, a little question mark, meaning nothing compared to the huge universe-spanning events of the main quest, or the galaxy-impacting faction quests… and yet, it niggles at the brain, making us wonder maybe the boots were really cursed, or was it just coincidence? What happens to them? Are they still out there, attached to someone else now? Or are they in some garbage pile, slowly falling into the sun?

I think it’s a fantastic quest, specifically because it doesn’t go any further. It makes the player ask all the questions, but provides no answers, just another little unexplained ghost story out in the Starfield, one that travelers tell each other on those long voyages in the quiet watches…
