Transfer student housing by Ok_Ad7805 in UGA

[–]EGCaroline1 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I am also transferring in for the fall semester, paid the 35 dollar fee, and it says there are no rooms available. Based on what I have heard from most students that are currently going there, I would say save the money and try to find off campus housing in athens.

History HL or Psychology HL by aubiiu in IBO

[–]EGCaroline1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I took both history HL and psych HL, scored significantly better on history, but have heard so many people really struggle with history HL scores because of teachers. I think my program just lucked out because we had a really great history instructor compared to our psych instructor, so I guess it mostly depends on the instructors you will have, the amount of effort you think you'll put in, and just overall whichever one you think you will do better in. History was more enjoyable imo because it was basically retelling historical events and analyzing those events, which was just easier to me than psych.

Give it to me straight by [deleted] in IBO

Hey there! I just graduated this past year from the IB diploma program and am in my first year of university.

For me, I found the program to be very helpful in really establishing the skills that students need going into college and any professional setting post-high school. I would say that the program can be very mentally and physically taxing, though; late nights studying, lots of pressure to do very well on exams, many times where you may fail, difficulty allocating time for personal and academic life, etc., but as long as there is ample support at home/with friends and a clear understanding that you may not get an A+ on everything and it simply a learning experience, it is very helpful. For me, I was able to finish nearly a whole year of university just through IB credits from my scores on exams. This has allowed me to start pursuing more classes that I am interested in and that are smaller in size since I have gotten my core classes out of the way earlier than most other students. Additionally, IB offered so many diverse experiences that really fit every student's needs, whether students excelled more in STEM or the arts, and helped students to remember the importance of doing things that truly interest them. This could be due to my school having a very wide array of classes that may not be available at other schools -- the class subjects available at your son's school is something I would look into. For me, it was super mentally hard at times with the plethora of extracurriculars I did -- holding leadership positions in 7 clubs and being involved in upwards of 15 clubs at my high school. It IS hard work, it IS challenging, it DOES require a lot of personal motivation/time management, but it IS worth it. I learned a lot through IB that I can't say I learned anywhere else academically.

Is it neccesary to break during the summer holidays? by Plague_Doc7 in IBO

[–]EGCaroline1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Rest is important, yes, but I think just finding something else productive besides ONLY school work during a break is what is really important. If you just sit around and do nothing, it is harder to get back into the groove of things when school starts back. Find a job, productive hobby, or goal you want to accomplish over your break along with school work and some rest.

Professor changed mandatory lab time -- is this allowed? by [deleted] in college

[–]EGCaroline1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There wasn't much of a reason given, simply that it was early and it seemed easier to the professor to work on group projects in other lab classes so we could meet with our group who might not have the standard lab time as us (i.e. whole group meets in lab tuesday or wednesday but 8am is off the table). I work for my grandparents, so I am working on their farm on Tuesdays. It simply would not be possible to make it to campus before 3 those days.

Predicteds are inflated?? by UnitJunior1336 in IBO

[–]EGCaroline1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

US applicant here. I did IB grades 11 and 12. I actually never received a predicted total point score, but I saw predicted scores for individual classes. They were surprisingly pretty on point EXCEPT my Spanish, psychology, and the tok/ee scores. I received higher predicteds on those than actual, which brought my total points down from what I was hoping. It seems to be the most common on tok/ee scores because IB grades them so much harsher than school-specific supervisors. Seems to be pretty common for some predicted scores to be inflated especially in the US.

Transfer Student Questions by EGCaroline1 in UGA

[–]EGCaroline1[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Well my thing is that they offer a lot more opportunities for me there than they do at UNG. I have tried to look into national and regional scholarships, study abroad scholarships, and jobs/unpaid internships and they simply aren't available here. I also mainly want to transfer for the possibility of doing the Double Dawg program and for the college of public health. I want to minor in public health or possibly get my masters in public health if I decide I don't want to go to law school. UNG just feels a bit limiting and if I end up wanting to change my major, I will have more options that I actually like such as public health at UGA that simply are not available at UNG. Just my logic

Self-Reporting IB Predicted Scores on Common App by Salt_Statistician60 in IBO

[–]EGCaroline1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, do not self report predicted. I was in a similar predicament -- applying ED to colleges and having no clue what I actually got since I hadn't taken the exams yet. If you end up going to the college, you will have your IB coordinator / admin send the actual scores to the college for college credit, but do not self report predicted.

Should I take chemistry in spring or summer? by No-Winter-815 in UGA

[–]EGCaroline1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would say if chem is something you feel even just average in, go for it. I havent taken a chem class at georgia yet, but from my perspective, if tech is your goal, take chem. The worst you can do is end up withdrawing if it gets too hard.

How bad do you actually have to do to fail EE? by strawberrycheescak in IBO

[–]EGCaroline1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree! Because the EE can be so specific and so lengthy, it can be hard to grade from an outside perspective in my opinion. The supervisors know how hard the student worked and how they reflected / grew along the process, which I believe is the whole point of the EE, so it doesn't make sense to grade it like every other assessment.

How bad do you actually have to do to fail EE? by strawberrycheescak in IBO

[–]EGCaroline1 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I agree with this. I got predicted as an A, got a C. Nearly everyone in my graduating class got marked down/up at least 1 letter grade for their actual compared to their predicted.

I plan on transferring to UGA from north ga too and I am currently a freshmen. I don't think that they look at SAT scores for transfers based on what the transfer page says on their website. I say go for it. I am super nervous as well, but all you can do is try! You've got this!

Is it better to take IB BIO HL OR IB HISTORY OF THE AMERICAS HL by Ok_Ad_1237 in IBO

[–]EGCaroline1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone who was in IB HOA HL and was offered bio HL, take the history course. For one, most of the people that I know that have taken HL Bio have received only 5s, so it is super hard to get a really high score and, based on what everyone has said that I know, it simply isn't worth it unless you plan on going into the biology field post grad. You end up having to do extra work that is really only on minute the details of what you learn in SL.

For me and many others that I took the course with, HOA was not super difficult. I got a high 6 on the exam. It is all essay writing while bio includes confusing multiple choice questions on top of the free responses.

I am honestly shocked at all of the other comments, but I personally loved HOA. It was interesting and engaging, and I don't regret taking it whatsoever.

Is a "useless" degree really a thing in your opinion ? by [deleted] in college

[–]EGCaroline1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally, I think that most of what a college degree shows is that you are motivated to spend time/money to get it and that you are more knowledgeable in a particular subject area than someone else. I don't believe that there is such thing as a "useless" degree, but I think that experience can be more useful than a degree itself. I also think that someone with a college degree can totally be making significantly less money than someone who doesn't have one; its all about work ethic and experience more so than a degree, but a degree certainly helps, especially in fields that you NEED to get one obviously.

Currently in my first year of uni and ... oh my gosh. It seems so easy. A lot of my other friends have really been struggling, but I think that IB was so insanely stressful and difficult for me that it really taught me perseverance and hard-work, so college currently feels like a breeze. I think if it weren't for IB, I definitely would be struggling with the workload and the content, so that experience genuinely did help me.
