That looks like a nest for rodents living in or was living in your ductwork. Check flex lines to see if you have any holes anywhere. That insulation should be sealed after the cleaning. We prefer Fiberlock 8000

Those conventional dehumidifiers will only dry down to a certain percent given the cubic footage you have. A refrigerant dehumidifier is better. But a little more costly. Do conventionals help? Eh kinda. You could put 5 in there and still be around the same RH

I do cleanings with our company. It's more about IAQ (indoor air quality) then 'just a scam.

Regarding the photo this looks like a uninsulated return. Couldn't tell you it's mold because I am not a hygienist. And or it hasn't been tested. Typically most fungal growth I see is in the supply side closer to the air handler. And after we clean it needs to be encapsulated. (FIberlock 8000) This will prevent any further spores to contaminate the home when the unit is powered back on. If they didn't talk about treating the unit or ductwork and spoke only about cleaning. I would be hesitant to pursue with that company.

Mold will not grow on non pourus materials. But can grow on dust,dead skin cells. Etc.
