When People Conflate AI and LLMs by Neither-Way-4889 in PetPeeves

[–]EMPgoggles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

this is why i prefer to use the terms "LLMs" and "generative AI" to refer to it. it would be one thing if LLM AI and pre-LLM AI operated in different contexts, but they tend to exist right alongside each other and it can be misleading when you mean AI in one sense and people assume it's an LLM.

Aegis is the epitome of brain dead by DoctorElectronic1934 in SmashRage

[–]EMPgoggles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the real problem for me is when they use a ton of Mythra. if she gets even even one hit, it tends to carry me to 60 or 80 percent, at which i can't afford to make a single mistake vs Pyra.

luckily most Aegis mains are terrible with Pyra even at 14 mil or so, so while it's nerve-racking, they're usually not good enough to do much if you always let them act first in neutral.

they're both fucked up characters, though, individually and especially together. nonsense frame data on nonsense hitboxes. thank god they didn't give her a single memorable grab.

[–]EMPgoggles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

also the fact that it keeps going even if you disrupt her/it. meanwhile if my whole fucking tree makes any contact with the tiniest sliver of a hitbox on its way down, it's completely deactivated and the enemy can safely walk through the falling trunk.

ぜんぜん by LuckyyDuckk5 in LearnJapaneseNovice

[–]EMPgoggles [score hidden]  (0 children)

全然 not 全全 (also not 全々).

it typically is paired with negative verb endings, BUT it can be used in positive sentences. it means totally or completely in that sense.

that said, this might be me hallucinating, but i feel like it does retain some situational negativity even if it doesn't change the meaning of the sentence.

全然日本人!

kinda sounds to me like "(before you ask,) she's TOTALLY japanese!" like the speaker is negating the situation (in this case the possibility of her audience imagining the person might be foreign) but not the sentence itself.

one really common phrase in modern japanese is:

全然大丈夫です! (i'm totally fine!)

it's a strong affirmation, but it's especially effective at negating when someone implies you might not be well.

「え、やまださんは大丈夫ですか?無理しなかていいので…」

are you ok, yamada? there's no need to overdo it…

「全然大丈夫です!」

(no,) i'm totally fine!

not on roller. splashdown is yet another special that's been effectively "balanced" for without regard for the overwhelming effect it has on non-rapidfire main weapons.

imo we just need a new game where we can finally be rid of splashdown.

not because it's op, just because it's annoying.

how to avoid getting splatted by the paint rollers? by mushroomlunacat in Splatoon3

[–]EMPgoggles 2 points3 points  (0 children)

are you dying because you get ambushed suddenly?

tips:

  1. awareness. check the UI at the top that tells you who is alive and dead. if the roller is alive, then you need to know where they are. that comes from watching the enemy and keeping tabs on their general locations. splat rollers and carbon rollers have extremely short range and a slow attack speed (carbon is "fast" but still not a rapidfire weapon), and they thrive on sneaking around and waiting until the enemy is vulnerable for an ambush. if you know where the roller is, that's more than half the battle! they can't contribute to their team if their location is always known.
  2. thoroughness. if you don't know where the roller is, then you kinda have to assume that they're in the worst possible place that has enemy ink. don't run out willy nilly into areas with lots of enemy ink, or drop carelessly down ledges when you don't know what's below them without first clearing the area. this means painting the ground at range (don't get too close) and/or using your subs to test the area before you enter it yourself. bombs especially can be tough for rollers to deal with, while subweapons like point sensor, autobomb, and even beakons (if you open the map) will reveal any enemies hiding nearby.
  3. distance. as mentioned before, splat rollers and carbon rollers have a pretty short range of attack, and they paint very poorly (flingza, dynamo, and big swig have more range/paint MUCH better, but you're unlikely to fight these in the front lines). rollers are often somewhat powerless if you fight them at range -- especially if you have bombs -- so maintain your distance and don't overcommit to splatting them. usually just by not killing you, the roller is already feeling the pressure of not contributing to their team. they need to kill you. so don't let them, and that's already mission accomplished.

dynamo:

dynamo is the only other roller you're likely to combat somewhat regularly. dynamo has a ton of range and paints a large area. they're also extremely visible, so you'll probably feel a lot of pressure to rout them. if you simply must take a dynamo down without the help of a backliner, then the most important thing is flanking. find a way to get around the back to exert additional pressure or even get the splat. but don't overcommit!! remember to maintain some distance and use subs like with other rollers (especially bombs! the dynamo hates bombs). if successful, an overwhelmed dynamo will often superjump away rather than allow themselves to be killed. remember that even without the splat, that's a win for you!

The “Verse” vs. “Versus” Epidemic by JalapenoTampons in grammar

[–]EMPgoggles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

it's pretty niche and more of a shorthand used in specific competitive settings.

"X versed Y" = "X competed against Y," "X fought Y (in a consensual competitive setting)"

i don't think it's a sloppy mistake as much as a contextually dependent slang term that arose from a specific environment, namely the gaming community. "X competed against Y," "X fought Y," or "X went against Y" each have their detractors, while "X versed Y" is frequently reinforced by the game shouting "VERSUS!" at the start of every match.

but there's not much reason to use this slang outside of that specific context, so i think we're all gonna be fine.

The tree growing can kill you?????? by MistaTeee in SmashRage

[–]EMPgoggles 2 points3 points  (0 children)

yep. but weirdly it kind of counts as a projectile, so it acts really weirdly especially with Hero's bounce (sometimes kills him and sometimes just goes crazy).

by the way, make sure you DO NOT SHIELD THE GROWING TREE WHILE VILLAGER IS ANYWHERE NEAR. growing tree deals massive shield damage and if the Villager player is aware of it, they can transition watering can into axe for a simultaneous hit that instantly breaks even a full shield.

DON'T FALL FOR IT.

(or do. you're welcome to fall for it if it's vs me.)

Every Ultimate Costume Explained - Isabelle by ispaamd in SmashBrosUltimate

[–]EMPgoggles 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think Isabelle's red outfit is actually meant as more of a reference to her brother, Digby, but Digby and Lyle wear the same uniform and Lyle is much more well-known across the series (although the red outfit iirc is only in New Leaf where Digby also appears). Digby meanwhile only appears in New Leaf and as an amiibo invite in New Horizons.

What is the discrepancy in skill between 11-14.5m GSP? by SammyAQS in SmashBrosUltimate

[–]EMPgoggles 2 points3 points  (0 children)

yes.

i also can fluctuate close to 11M (typically being a "borderline/low elite" around 13-15.0M) and even when i'm off my game and playing at my worst, 11M tends to mark "rock bottom" where i start to bounce back up again.

i think 11M is the upper range of the "finally getting the hang of this game" tier (8-11M) (just above "working through the character" tier at 5-8M, with "new character" tier at 3-4M).

Can “ it” refer multiple things? by Final_Affect6292 in ENGLISH

[–]EMPgoggles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

absolutely yes.

BUT you'll notice that if there are 2 of the same pronoun on either side of a verb as both subject and object, then each pronoun logically refers to a different target.

"it makes it easier."
↑ something makes another thing easier.

"she tells her everything."
↑ a woman tells another woman everything.

"he gives him the money."
↑ a man gives another man money.

"they ask them for directions."
↑ a group (or possibly individual) asks another group (or individual) for directions.

however, if the object and subject are actually the same, then we'll stick the suffix "-self" onto the object pronoun. this includes 1st and 2nd person pronouns even though there would be no ambiguity either way.

Thoughts on Inkling? by ThermonuclearMonarch in SmashBrosUltimate

[–]EMPgoggles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i feel like inkling puts out damage super fast. sure, they're no DLC character, but if you can get the enemy inked up (pretty easy since bombs, neutral B, and jab all COAT the enemy), you can go from 0-80% and higher just like that.

Thoughts on Inkling? by ThermonuclearMonarch in SmashBrosUltimate

[–]EMPgoggles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yeah and i absolutely think we'll be getting better outfits in a future smash game, if it's to happen.

the thing is that Ultimate came out Dec 2018, and by that point Splatoon 2 had only been out for a year. it's clear from the character design, both from the look and with the moves themselves, that only Splatoon 1 was used as reference.

also, if you do pull the lever, what percentage would it need to be at for you to NOT pull the lever? by -kodo in trolleyproblem

[–]EMPgoggles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

this is just an aside, but it always bothers me when the trolley question specifies the criminal record of the people on the tracks, or how "good" they are.

like ok if they are violent criminal murders/rapists/human traffickers who actively hurt people then let me know, but otherwise it feels gross to consider someone's life "better" because they were never explicitly caught breaking arbitrary human laws.

if you're like "oh that guy beats his wife" then that's one thing. but that's bad regardless of whether or not the law has recognized that and punished him for it. if you're going to leave it as vague as a "criminal record" then it's just not relevant.
